Warm greetings as we kick off the inaugural episode of our“Reaction” series, spotlighting the KOPI Deva! In this series, we take a deep dive into groundbreaking products. Crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter are the launchpads for these innovations. Our mission is to offer you a well-rounded perspective based on the information at hand. We want to emphasize that our analysis isn’t rooted in absolute neutrality. Instead, we aim to shed light on the intriguing features of the product while also pointing out potential areas of concern. So, buckle up for an exhilarating journey into the dynamic realms of coffee and crowdfunding, where you might stumble upon the next game-changing product. Let’s hit the ground running with the Kopi Deva coffee grinder.

KOPI Deva features

Meet the KOPI Deva, a versatile single-dose coffee grinder that’s perfect for any coffee brewing method, be it a robust espresso or a refreshing cold brew. Let’s dive into some of its standout features:

  • 64 mm stainless steel flat grinding wheels: KOPI Deva’s flat grinding wheels are made from high-quality stainless steel, ensuring precise, uniform grinding.
  • Micrometric adjustment: Thanks to its micrometric adjustment, you can adjust the fineness of grind to suit your preferences, enabling a wide variety of coffee preparations.
  • Adjustable rotation speed: The grinder features an adjustable rotation speed ranging from 200 to 1000 rpm. This allows you to adapt the speed to the type of coffee you’re brewing.
  • Minimum retention: KOPI Deva claims a minimum retention of just 0.2 g using the RDT (Ross Distribution Technique) measurement method. This means it retains very little coffee between successive grinds.
  • Patented technology for perfect grinding wheel alignment: Thanks to its patented technology, the KOPI Deva ensures perfect grinding wheel alignment. This contributes to uniform, high-quality grinding.
  • Battery-powered grinder: The grinder is powered by a rechargeable battery with a claimed autonomy of 3 kg of ground coffee. This means you can use it without the need for a nearby electrical outlet, offering greater freedom of movement.

Design and durability

Imbued with a blend of modernity and elegance, the design of the KOPI Deva is truly captivating. The meticulous selection of materials and the thoughtful design of the mill reflect a keen eye for detail, offering not just a visually delightful experience but also a functional one.
However, there’s a slight concern that Coffeegeek wishes to highlight: the battery operation. While it does provide a certain level of mobility, it also raises questions about the longevity of the battery-powered motor. The use of batteries carries a significant environmental footprint. Additionally, their efficiency tends to diminish with repeated charging cycles.

Availability and prices

In 2021, the KOPI Deva project was generously supported by 144 contributors who collectively raised a total of £81,989. Despite this remarkable achievement, the brand has encountered some production delays. However, the good news is that the KOPI Deva is now available for purchase on the brand’s official website. Deliveries are planned for the 4th quarter of the year. The starting price for this innovative product is a reasonable £650 (approximately €760), and this includes the addition of Mazzer wheels.

When it comes to price, KOPI Deva is on the higher end compared to other mills available in the market. It’s true that there are mills out there that offer their products at a more affordable price point than the KOPI Deva. However, the KOPI Deva mill is not just about functionality, it’s also about style and likely superior performance. Being a product of a relatively new brand, it may not yet provide the same level of customer service and care as the more established brands in the industry. To give you a perspective, a DF64 mill, for instance, is priced under €400.
