As a frequent business traveler with a growing fondness for travel coffee machines, I recently decided to invest in the Timemore C3 ESP Pro coffee grinder. This intriguing gadget came highly recommended by several acquaintances who couldn’t be happier with their purchase. I want to clarify that this article isn’t sponsored by Timemore – I bought the grinder myself for personal use. My goal is to provide you with the most thorough and unbiased review I possibly can.

Exploring the Design of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro

Exploring the Folding Crank

As an enthusiast of travel mills, I was instantly drawn to the Timemore range due to its unique feature – the folding crank. This is a significant advantage that sets it apart. Since this system is patented, it’s hard to find any other brand that offers a similar feature. Some might bring up the 1Zpresso brand, which also has a folding crank. However, the key difference is in its compactness: when folded, the 1Zpresso crank still occupies some space. In contrast, the Timemore’s crank neatly tucks into the body of the mill, making it a more space-efficient choice.

The handle of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro is crafted entirely from stainless steel and seamlessly integrates with the aluminum cap. Despite its compact size, this handle provides an exceptional grip. It’s uniquely designed with a ball bearing system, setting it apart from competitors like 1Zpresso, Kingrinder, and El Comandante C40, which use a clip system. The exemplary build quality of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro not only ensures durability but also prevents the handle from accidentally detaching from the crank.

When you fold the crank, a rubber stop is there to ensure that the metal part of the crank doesn’t touch the body of the mill. It’s a neat little feature that helps protect your mill!

Just a quick heads-up for all you coffee enthusiasts out there! At Timemore, when you see the “Pro” label, it signifies the inclusion of a handy folding crank. Interestingly, there’s another variant of this mill, known as the Timemore C3 ESP. It’s a more budget-friendly option, but please be aware that it does not come with a folding crank.

Another noteworthy feature of Timemore’s mills is the ball-bearing mounting of the handle. This design ensures a smooth rotation of the handle and safeguards it from being accidentally detached by a simple pull. This is a significant improvement over other brands that use a clip system, which can be less secure. With a clip attachment, there’s a heightened chance of the handle becoming loose, leading some users to seek help from after-sales service. This is where Timemore shines, offering a superior and reliable solution.

Exploring the Structure of the Mill

The body of the mill is crafted entirely from aluminum. This sets it apart from other brands that typically choose a completely smooth body, necessitating a rubber ring to enhance grip and stop the mill from slipping. In contrast, Timemore has opted for a grooved surface. From my personal experience, I find the grip to be quite comfortable. Moreover, the mill remains stable during use, not spinning on its own due to this innovative design, even with the torque produced by the grinding process.

Exploring the Adjustment Wheel

Unlike its larger counterpart, the Timemore S3, the C3 ESP Pro features its adjustment knob directly on the grinding wheels, offering a unique design twist.

Just like the C40’s “Red Clix” kit that enhances the number of clicks available, the Timemore C3/C3S models provide a robust 12 clicks per revolution. However, the C3 ESP model steps it up a notch with a whopping 30 clicks, mirroring the functionality of a mill equipped with the C40’s kit.

The Timemore C3 ESP is designed with precision in mind, offering an adjustment granularity of 23.3 µm for each click. This feature ensures you can fine-tune your settings to achieve the perfect grind every time.

Let’s dive into the recommended settings based on the type of extraction you’re performing:

Here’s how you can interpret the setting position: the first number represents the total number of full rotations you need to make with the setting wheel. The second number, on the other hand, indicates the specific graduation mark where you should stop after completing the full turns. To illustrate, if the setting is 1.6, this means you should make one full rotation with the dial, and then halt at the 6th graduation mark.

  • Espresso: graduation 0.3 to 1.0
  • Moka Pot: graduation 1.0 to 1.7
  • AeroPress: scale 9 to 25
  • For Over: graduation 1.1 to 2.4
  • French Press: graduation 1.9 to 2.5

Introducing the S2C600 Grinding Wheel

Meet the Timemore’s S2C600 millstone, a remarkable evolution of the C2C800. This innovative design was previously featured in the now-retired Timemore Chestnut X mill. The latest generation, the S2C600, now graces several mills in the Timemore lineup, including the Timemore S3, which I had the pleasure of testing a few months ago.

I was already quite taken with the Chestnut X‘s grinding wheel, which demonstrated a remarkable ability to produce an even grind. Now, Timemore has taken things up a notch, enhancing the grind consistency even further in this latest version.

Introducing the Recipient

From my personal experience, I’ve found that the quality of a mill’s container often mirrors the overall craftsmanship and design of the mill itself. Take the Kinu Phoenix for instance. Its plastic container is a tad too light, which unfortunately causes the mill to lose its balance when set on a work surface. Conversely, the C40 features a rim on the inside of its container. While this may seem like a minor detail, it actually leads to coffee retention when you’re transferring the grounds into the filter.

When it comes to the Timemore grinder, one of its standout features is the absence of an internal rim in the container, which eliminates the possibility of coffee getting stuck. Additionally, its substantial weight contributes to stabilizing the grinder by lowering its center of gravity. This is a unique feature not found in other models, such as those from 1Zpresso. Another noteworthy aspect is the screw-fastened design of the container, which enhances its durability.

Finally, a thoughtful detail to note is the addition of a rubber insert strategically positioned beneath the container. This not only safeguards your worktop but also speaks volumes about the meticulous attention given to the design.

Mastering Espresso Extraction with the Timemore C3 ESP Pro

While the Timemore S3 left me somewhat underwhelmed when it came to espresso, the Timemore C3 ESP Pro truly shines in this department. To illustrate, let’s take a look at an example from a La Pavoni machine.

First, I carefully measure out 16 g of coffee. To ensure a smooth grind and reduce static cling, I lightly mist the coffee with water using the RDT technique. Then, I proceed to grind the coffee using the reliable Timemore grinder.

So, here we have the outcome you’ve been waiting for.

While it’s certainly feasible to whip up espressos using this grinder, the Timemore C3 ESP Pro wouldn’t be my top pick for this particular brewing method. The primary reason lies in the size of the grindstones, 38 mm. This size significantly extends the grinding time when compared to mills fitted with larger grindstones, like the Kingrinder K6 or the pricier 1Zpresso J-Ultra.

Experience the magic of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro! It may take me just a tad over a minute to grind an espresso, but when I switch to the 47 or 48 mm wheels, I can cut that time down to approximately 40 seconds. It’s all about efficiency and flavor!

Experience the Superiority of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro on the Go

In my experience, Timemore truly shines when it comes to extractions that require a coarser grind. This is a stark contrast to competing brands like 1Zpresso, which, in my opinion, seems to have a particular knack for espresso.

Rest assured, the grind you’ll achieve with the Timemore is exceptionally consistent, a testament to the brand’s proficiency. Whether you’re brewing with a V60 or using my personal favorite, the travel-friendly Pipamoka (which incidentally, is why I purchased this grinder), I believe it strikes the perfect balance.

With the 38 mm grinding wheel, this type of extraction is a breeze. The mill operates swiftly, producing a robust grind without any hassle.

Let’s dive into the key steps for brewing a perfect cup of coffee using the Wacaco Pipamoka:

With these straightforward steps, you’ll be able to whip up a delicious cup of quality coffee in no time, even when you’re on the go.

Grind 14 g of coffee using the Timemore C3 ESP Pro: I recommend using the 1.9 setting. This means you’ll need to make one full turn of the setting wheel, then adjust it to position 9.

So, here we have the outcome:

A Step-by-Step Guide to Dismantling and Cleaning Your Timemore C3 ESP Pro

Putting the mill back together and giving it a good clean is incredibly straightforward. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process:

  1. Unscrew the adjustment knob completely to release the grinding wheel.
  2. Remove the central rod to gain access to the interior of the mill.
  3. Clean the inside of the grinder with a brush or dry cloth to remove any coffee residue.
  4. Reassemble the mill in the reverse order : replace the central spindle, reinstall the grinding wheel, then screw back the adjustment knob.

By following these steps, you can ensure the mill’s maintenance is both quick and effortless. This not only guarantees its longevity but also enhances its performance.

Wrapping It Up

I purchased the Chestnut C3 ESP Pro coffee grinder primarily for my travel needs. It’s a perfect companion for my compact travel coffee machine, the Wacaco Pipamoka. What really impressed me about this grinder were its compact size, affordable price, excellent build quality, and consistent grind.

I believe it’s especially well-suited for filter coffee, thanks to its compact grinding wheel. However, don’t let its size fool you! It’s also quite proficient at whipping up espressos, albeit with a slightly longer grinding time.

When it comes to comparing Timemore mills, I have a distinct preference for the C3 ESP Pro over the S3. While the S3 may be more robust and features a larger grinding wheel, it falls short when it comes to making espressos, a task at which the C3 ESP Pro excels. If you’re on the hunt for a grinder that’s even more compact, I invite you to read my review of the Wacaco Exagrinder, a model designed specifically with this in mind.

With that in mind, I’m delighted to award it a 5-star rating.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

My journey with the Wacaco Minipresso GR2 isn’t my first rodeo with this brand. Having previously purchased the Picopresso and recently welcomed the Wacaco Pipamoka into my life, I’ve been consistently impressed by the excellent quality of these machines. So, I reached out to Wacaco and proposed testing the Minipresso GR2 for my site, to which they kindly agreed by providing me with a unit. Please note, this generosity will not sway my review for CoffeeGeek in any way. Wacaco has given me complete freedom in crafting this article.

Unveiling the Aesthetics and Design of the Wacaco Minipresso GR2

Introducing the Minipresso GR2, a portable espresso machine meticulously crafted for those who can’t resist a good cup of coffee, no matter where they are. Its compact and lightweight design makes it a breeze to carry around. The best part? It operates manually, without the need for electricity or gas cartridges. Whether you prefer a strong shot or a milder one, it can hold 8 or 12 grams of ground coffee and brews approximately 45 ml of rich, aromatic espresso. With its ergonomic design, the Minipresso GR2 is the perfect companion for travel, camping trips, or even those much-needed office coffee breaks.

Here’s what comes with your GR2:

  • Minipresso GR2 (portable espresso machine)
  • Integrated 60 mlwater tank
  • Filter holder for 8 or 12 grams of ground coffee
  • Coffeemeasuring spoon
  • Tamper to pack ground coffee
  • Support for filter holder
  • Carrying case
  • User manual to guide preparation

From my personal experience, I appreciate the tactile sensation it provides. Despite being crafted from plastic, it exudes a sense of premium quality that contributes to its robust feel. The design is impeccable, with accessories fitting seamlessly into the water tank. As you use it, you’ll discover a myriad of carefully considered details, demonstrating Wacaco’s relentless pursuit of excellence.

Wacaco has truly pushed the boundaries of miniaturization with this latest generation of Minipresso. This leap forward is beautifully captured in the photo below, which illustrates the progression from the GR to the GR2 models.

Brewing the Perfect Cup with the Wacaco Minipresso GR2

Once I’ve gently lifted the GR2 from its snug case, I carefully extract the accessories tucked away in the water tank. Next, I detach the cap that doubles as a cup, and finally, I position the Minipresso securely on its base.

First, I take off the cup, followed by unscrewing the base of the GR2. This base doubles as a filter holder. You have two options to choose from: 8g or 12g. Personally, I’m partial to the 12g setting. Wacaco has ingeniously crafted a base that enables the filter-holder to stand upright, ensuring its stability and preventing it from touching the table directly.

Looking to adjust your filter to 8g or 12g? I’ve discovered a handy animation on the official GR2 page that makes the process a breeze. All you need to do is add or remove a plastic disc. Plus, the animation also demonstrates the simplicity of disassembling and cleaning the filter. It’s as easy as pie!

When it comes to brewing my coffee, I start by meticulously measuring out 12g of beans. These are then finely ground using my trusty travel companion, the Timemore ESP C3 coffee grinder. While I’m busy with the beans, I set the kettle to work, heating up the water to the perfect temperature.

Included in the accessories is a funnel designed to assist you in pouring ground coffee into the filter. Despite its modest size, it accomplishes its task with absolute precision.

Before I start tamping, I personally like to distribute the coffee using a tool known as a WDT. This is a crucial step in the professional espresso-making world, as it helps prevent a common issue known as channeling. While there are various methods to mitigate this issue, it’s worth noting that channeling doesn’t significantly affect the Minipresso. However, if you’re curious to learn more about this topic, feel free to check out this informative article.

When it comes to tamping, the spoon can conveniently double up as a tamper. There’s absolutely no need to exert too much force. In my own experience, I’ve found that applying a pressure of about 3 to 5 kg does the trick just fine.

Before you begin the extraction process, it’s a good idea to warm up the different parts of your Minipresso GR2 using hot water. Here’s a simple way to do it: Pour some hot water into the reservoir. Then, without putting in the filter, give the pump a few presses. This will allow some water to flow through the coffee machine’s system, effectively preheating it.

With everything now set up perfectly, I’m all set to commence the extraction process.

First, I attach the filter holder to the GR2. Next, I fill the reservoir with hot water. After securely closing it, I proceed to pump.

Upon receiving the Minipresso, I found myself pondering a question – should I fully tighten the tank cap or leave it slightly open? Well, the answer is, you can indeed screw it on completely. The ingenious design of the system ensures water circulation without the creation of a vacuum. So, go ahead and secure that cap tightly!

And voila! Here’s what we’ve got:

I must say, I’m quite pleased with the outcome from the cup. Granted, it doesn’t quite match the caliber of a professional machine, particularly when stacked against Wacaco’s Picopresso. Nonetheless, the GR2 performs admirably in its role.

Just a quick note here – you might have noticed that I didn’t fill the cup to the brim, even though there was still water left in the reservoir. This wasn’t an oversight, but a conscious decision on my part to brew a more robust and flavorful cup of coffee.

Wacaco has produced an excellent video showing the steps involved in making a coffee with.

Your Easy Guide to Cleaning the GR2

One of the standout features of the diverse range of Wacaco products I’ve had the pleasure of testing is their effortless disassembly. Cleaning the GR2 is a breeze, just follow these easy steps:

  • Unscrew the filter holder and eject the coffee grounds.
  • Press the extraction nozzle with your finger to remove the filter from the filter holder (see picture below).
  • Remove the filter from the GR2 body (easier to do when pumping cold water) (see picture below).
  • Rinse the various components.

Wrapping It Up

I must say, I was genuinely taken aback by the impressive results in the cup delivered by the Minipresso GR2. Not only that, but the ease and speed of its operation truly stood out. Its compact size makes it a perfect travel companion. Given that my job frequently requires me to be on the road for several days, having this handy device with me has been an absolute delight.

Furthermore, the GR2 offers a significant advantage over the Picopresso. It allows you to prepare multiple servings ahead of time. Simply acquire the optional components, and you can conveniently prepare your doses at home in advance.

Great news! The GR2 case and the handy capsules with a carrying case are now available for purchase on Amazon.

Just a quick note for all you Nespresso capsule enthusiasts out there! Wacaco has a variant of the GR2, the Minipresso NS2 model, which I haven’t had the chance to test yet. This model allows you to use your beloved Nespresso capsules (which, let’s not forget, can be reused) instead of ground coffee.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Bright Side

  • Extremely compact
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to clean
  • Price
  • Interesting cup result

Areas for Improvement

  • The carrying case and “capsules” are optional (but at a reasonable price).

Are you curious about the Kuku Maker’s ability to craft an authentic espresso? This question sprang to mind after viewing demonstrations featuring the Timemore Chestnut S3. From my personal testing, it appears that this grinder struggles to produce a true espresso, even when adjusted to its finest setting.

Featured on the left is the Timemore Chestnut S3 coffee grinder, which we’ve used in the demonstration video you’ll find below. For an in-depth review and my personal analysis of its espresso-making capabilities, feel free to check out the related article.

Mastering Espresso Extraction with the Kuku Maker and Timemore S3

Our coffee machine employs the intriguing centrifugal extraction technology, sparking a bit of curiosity. The exact extraction pressure remains a mystery as it hinges entirely on the centrifugal rotation speed to brew your perfect cup of coffee.

Just like with the Kuku maker, the coffee “descends” at the end of the brewing process. This design doesn’t allow us to see the extraction process as clearly as we could with a bottomless filter holder. Consequently, assessing the quality of the coffee as it flows can be a bit tricky. Typically, for instance, we can observe the presence (or lack thereof) of channeling during the extraction process.

Isn’t it fascinating how this coffee machine introduces us to a distinctive brewing technique? It’s somewhat akin to the espresso method, yet it possesses its own unique charm. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this!

We’d love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to express your opinions in the comments section below.

This machine truly captivates me, and I’m eager to keep tracking its advancements. However, I must admit that I haven’t participated directly, as my fascination with this project is purely from a technological standpoint. I suspect I might miss some of the intricate steps involved in crafting my espresso, like employing a WDT or tamping, to name a few.

All About Espresso

Rating: 0.5 out of 5.

The outcomes I experienced with my espressos made using the S3 were truly remarkable. It appears that Timemore may have slightly miscalibrated the grinder spacing on the “zero” setting, which unfortunately makes it challenging to achieve a fine enough grind for espresso. Even when adjusted to the finest setting, my coffee, which was roasted just 12 days ago, tends to flow a bit too rapidly under a pressure that doesn’t exceed 4 bar, as demonstrated in the video below. This could be due to one of two potential reasons:

  • Either the Timemore S3 is designed so that the grinding wheels, even at the zero setting, are spaced apart to prevent damage, but in this case, the spacing is excessive. I usually use 16 g of coffee for my espressos, and with other grinders such as the Timemore Chestnut X, Kingrinder K6, 1Zpresso J Ultra, C40 and others, I haven’t encountered any problems. For example, with the Kingrinder K6, I set the position to 35 for 16g of coffee. On the other hand, with the S3, even at the finest setting, the grind remains too coarse, leaving the only solution to increase the quantity of coffee to obtain an espresso. Even so, the adjustment margin remains too small. The S3 doesn’t seem ideal for espresso.
  • Either the mill is defective. But from the exchanges I’ve had with Timemore on this subject, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

At first, I toyed with the idea of swapping my trusty Kingrinder K6 for the sleek Timemore Chestnut S3. However, after much thought, I’ve decided to stick with my current grinder.

This was a result I had not expected. I contacted Timemore for clarification and to determine whether or not there was a defect in my mill. Here’s a summary of our exchange:(click here to scroll down).

Hello Timemore,

Hope you’re doing great! I’m reaching out to you after my latest acquisition – the Timemore S3 coffee grinder. I bought this with the aim of replacing my Kingrinder K6 and sharing my thoughts about it on my coffee-centric website.

I’m just putting the finishing touches on the article that’s due to be published soon, and I thought I’d share some preliminary insights with you. The Timemore S3, boasting a larger burr size and an innovative top adjustment feature, initially appeared to be quite promising. However, I’m sorry to report that it falls short when it comes to preparing espresso. The grinder’s zero setting results in an overly large gap between the burrs, which unfortunately compromises the quality of the grind.

At first, I had a hunch that the grinder I got could be faulty. But after running a series of tests, it seems the problem is actually rooted in the product’s design. This revelation is quite surprising and letdown, especially when I reflect on the high expectations I had initially.

Here’s some good news! The grinder works wonderfully with other brewing methods. I gave it a whirl with the V60 this morning and it didn’t disappoint. Plus, its user-friendly design and effortless operation deserve a round of applause.

However, I’ve noticed a slight hiccup with the grinder’s handle. It seems to have a bit of trouble retracting as it should, which makes me wonder about the thoroughness of the quality control process. Could you kindly shed some light on whether this is a one-off defect or a feature that’s common to this model?

Moreover, I’m eager to find out whether the grinder was intentionally crafted with these unique features, or if it diverges from the standard specifications we usually anticipate.

Should you wish to delve deeper into this topic, I’m more than happy to continue our discussion. I truly appreciate your time and consideration regarding this matter. Thank you!

I eagerly await your response. In the meantime, please accept my warmest regards from Timemore.

Warm Regards,

Hello Lucia,

At the moment, I’m putting the finishing touches on an in-depth piece about the Timemore Chestnut S3.

However, I’ve run into a bit of a snag. Despite adjusting the grinder to the finest setting, I’m finding it challenging to achieve a grind that’s just right for espresso preparation. This has got me wondering: is this a unique issue with the unit I have, or is it a trait shared by all grinders of this model?

Your feedback is incredibly important to me. It’s not just going to shape the content of my article, but it will also guide the advice I give to my readers. My goal is to deliver precise and trustworthy information, and gaining a deeper understanding of this topic will empower me to do just that.

I’d truly appreciate it if you could shed some light on this issue for me. If it’s required, I’m more than willing to try out a different model or welcome any further guidance on how to make the most of your product.

I appreciate your swift attention to this request. Please feel free to reach out if you need any additional information. I’m here to help!

Hello Lucia, I’ve put together a video to give you a more comprehensive understanding of the issue at hand. The key segment to focus on starts between the 8th and 9th minute, specifically during the coffee extraction process. Feel free to watch the video at your convenience by clicking on the following link: Timemore Chestnut S3 espresso test (youtube.com). I hope this helps!

There seems to be a bit of a hiccup with the coffee grinder. When it’s set to 0, the lowest setting on both the top and bottom dials, it’s unable to make coffee. This issue appears to impact the quality and consistency of the coffee it produces. As a frequent user of your product, this is a bit worrisome for me.

I’m excited to share with you that I’m currently crafting an article on this very topic. The plan is to have it ready for publication by the middle of the week. However, before I put the finishing touches on my piece, I’d love to incorporate your insights or comments. This will help me ensure that the information I present is both accurate and balanced. Specifically, I’m curious to know if this issue is a common occurrence across all your grinders, or if it’s just an isolated incident.

I would truly appreciate your swift response. This will significantly aid me in providing the most honest and precise evaluation for my readers. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

I appreciate your time and consideration in reading this message. Eagerly awaiting your response.

Warm Regards,

Hello Thomas,

We truly appreciate your patience. Thank you!

I’ve just attentively viewed the video you shared, and I can confirm that adjusting the grind size to 0 is perfectly acceptable.

For an optimal coffee experience, we suggest tweaking the weight of your coffee beans to between 18-20 grams. Give it a try and see the delightful difference it makes!

Should you have any queries or require further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! We’re here to help.

We truly appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Wishing you a delightful day!

Hello and a very good morning to you!

I experimented with both 18g and 20g settings before deciding to return the coffee grinder to the seller. Regardless of the setting, I found it impossible to brew a decent espresso.
Regrettably, the issue seems to lie in the mill gap, which is too wide. This makes it impossible to achieve the perfect espresso grind.

I’m delighted to incorporate your insightful response into my article. Thank you for your valuable contribution!

Hello there! I hope you’re having a fantastic day.

Hello Thomas,

Warm greetings to you this fine morning!

We would greatly appreciate it if you could share your video with us, showcasing the entire process of grinding 18g or 20g (similar to the one you previously sent us).

Let’s ensure we’ve got this right.

We truly appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Hello there,
Just to clarify, I’m not an employee but a fellow customer who purchased the same grinder. Unfortunately, I encountered an issue with the grinder as it arrived with a defective crank. Although I didn’t mention this in my initial review, I do have video evidence to support my claim.
I’ve also penned an article on my blog discussing the reasons why this grinder might not be suitable for espresso. However, I’ve noticed that my queries have yet to be addressed. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I just wanted to remind you that I’ve already returned the item to the seller I originally bought it from. Despite my best efforts, I wasn’t able to capture all my coffee-making adventures with it. And believe me, I’ve tried – but neither 18g nor 20g seems to be the magic number for brewing that perfect espresso. It simply didn’t work out.

Great! I’ll be incorporating your insightful responses directly into my article, maintaining their original essence.

Next, I’ll be taking the time to translate my article into English for my other coffee-themed blogs.

Hello Thomas,

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that may have been caused.

We truly value your feedback. In fact, just this afternoon, we carried out a series of tests inspired by the scenarios you brought to our attention.

The S3 is primarily engineered for pour-over coffee, yet it also boasts compatibility with espresso preparation. It’s a versatile choice for your brewing needs.

I understand that you’re experiencing an issue with your grinder’s handle, specifically, it’s not retracting as it should. Let’s work together to resolve this problem.

It’s a bit tricky to fully grasp the situation from your video. If you have any additional videos that could shed more light on the matter, we’d be more than happy to take a look at them.

We genuinely look forward to addressing each and every concern you’ve brought to our attention.

We truly appreciate your support!

Hello there,

If you’re curious about the issue I encountered with the crank, you can get a glimpse of it in this private, unlisted video (https://youtu.be/fCcNRx0b5iY?si=JraLJZeJL0s3NZv1). However, I didn’t mention this problem in the written review of the Timemore Chestnut S3 (Test du Timemore Chestnut S3, un résultat surprenant – CoffeeGeek) because I managed to resolve it independently.

Indeed, your coffee grinder is primarily designed for coffee beans. I’ll make sure to adjust my article to emphasize this point more clearly.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you consider developing a version of the S3 specifically designed for espresso. With all the fantastic elements you already have, you’re perfectly positioned to become the market leader.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

In summarizing my email conversations with Timemore, they’ve clarified that the S3 was primarily designed with pour-over coffee in mind. However, they also mentioned that it’s entirely feasible to use it for making espresso, provided you use a sufficient amount of coffee. From my personal experience and trials with espresso, it appears that around 10g of coffee is needed for the grinder to function optimally. To wrap up, it’s my belief that the S3’s grinder excels at coarser grinds, perfect for pour-over, but may fall a bit short when it comes to finer grinds needed for espresso. Additionally, I’ve noticed that the grinders are quite spaced out even at position 0, which could potentially result in under-extraction when brewing espresso.

Embracing Gentle Techniques

Rating: 5 out of 5.

When it comes to milder brewing methods like the V60 or Chemex, the perfect grind size is somewhere between medium and medium-fine. This ensures a balanced extraction, preventing both under-extraction (which happens when the infusion process is too quick) and over-extraction (when the infusion takes too long). It’s also vital to have a uniform grind size to prevent the filter from getting clogged with ultra-fine particles, ensuring a consistent extraction of all those delicious aromas and flavors. For a deeper dive into this topic, feel free to check out my article on troubleshooting filtered coffee infusions.

Experience the perfect blend with the Timemore S3. Its precision and uniform grind make it the ideal choice for brewing mild coffee. Get ready to elevate your coffee preparation to new heights with this exceptional tool.

Wrapping Things Up

When I decided to swap my KINGrinder K6 for this new espresso grinder, I quickly discovered that it wasn’t quite up to the task. It’s possible that my S3 model was defective (I’ll update this review if that turns out to be the case), but as it stands, I can’t recommend this grinder for espresso brewing. Instead, I’d suggest considering models like the KINGrinder or 1Zpresso. However, for slower extraction methods such as the V60, AeroPress or French press, this grinder performs admirably, particularly due to its

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Timemore presents the Chestnut S3, a grinder that beautifully marries aesthetics and ergonomics. Its excellent grip, tool-free disassembly, and stunning design make it a joy to use. However, it’s worth noting that it may not be the best choice for espresso lovers, as the gap between the grinding wheels is a bit too wide in the zero position. But fear not, if you’re a fan of gentler extraction methods like the V60, this grinder is perfectly suited for you and promises to deliver a superb cup of coffee.

The Bright Side

  • Overall mill design
  • Very good grip
  • Cleverly designed retractable crank
  • Pleasant to use
  • Easily dismantled
  • Grinding wheel for overlay
  • Suitable for gentle methods
  • Price

Areas for Improvement

  • Not suitable for espresso
  • The mill’s “zero” means the grinding wheels are too far apart

Thomas and I have both had the pleasure of exploring the Timemore Chestnut X. This exquisite mill is the brainchild of the seasoned Chinese firm, Timemore. It’s part of an impressive lineup that includes the Chestnut G1, Chestnut Slim, Chestnut C/C2, and Chestnut NANO models. The X model stands as the crown jewel in the brand’s collection. In this article, we’ll delve into its unique features and groundbreaking innovations.

Sophisticated, Stylish, and Unmistakably Contemporary

Upon purchasing the Timemore Chestnut X, you’ll be delighted to find your product meticulously packed in a box, cushioned by dense foam for added protection. Along with the mill, the package includes a handy cleaning brush, a compact storage bag, and a user-friendly instruction manual. Everything you need for a comprehensive experience. The mill boasts a sleek, elegant, and decidedly contemporary design. Its subtly square shape ensures an ergonomic grip for effortless use. Every detail has been meticulously considered to provide you with an enjoyable and intuitive experience.

The Timemore Chestnut X stands out from the crowd with its unique one-piece aluminum construction, meticulously crafted by a CNC machine. In contrast to other grinders like the El Commandante C40 or the Kinu M47 Phoenix, which incorporate plastic components, the Chestnut X is entirely plastic-free. This sturdy design ensures remarkable durability, positioning the Timemore as a dependable and enduring choice for coffee lovers.

Exploring a Selective Palette of Colors

Our grinder comes in two appealing shades: classic black and a unique dark green. It’s worth mentioning that the dark green variant is a special limited edition, adding an exclusive touch for coffee enthusiasts. We’ve had the pleasure of testing both versions, and we must say, they’ve truly captured our hearts!

The crank handle boasts superior quality as well. Engineered with ball bearings, it provides a comfortable and precise grip. Plus, the crank is retractable, a handy feature when dealing with limited space. Its movement is seamless and free of any slack, significantly boosting the mill’s efficiency. The handle can be detached and comes with a sturdy metal cap, setting it apart from some competitors who opt for plastic covers. This meticulous attention to detail underscores the exceptional quality and care invested in every component of the Timemore Chestnut X.

Timemore Brims with Innovative Ideas

Not only does Timemore feature a patented folding crank system, but it also leverages its premium mill to introduce a plethora of innovative features.

Double adjustment wheel for precision

Let’s begin with fine-tuning the grind size. With the Timemore Chestnut X, this is achieved using a unique double knob located within the grinder. This dual-adjustment system provides an additional 5 setting levels for each notch on the primary dial, allowing for incredibly precise grinding. Coupled with the secondary dial, the grinder boasts a total of 120 adjustment levels. Each major adjustment separates the grinding wheels by 80 microns, while the minor adjustments are spaced 15 microns apart. Rest assured, you’ll discover the perfect setting for your coffee. When compared to other grinders that adjust from the bottom, the Timemore offers superior precision and reliability. For instance, the El Commandante C40 had to introduce a more accurate setting wheel, the “Red clix”, for an additional $30.

Introducing Our Unique “Spike-to-Cut” Grinding Wheels

Let’s shine a spotlight on another feature that benefits from the brand’s meticulous attention to detail: the grinding wheels. The Timemore Chestnut X boasts a uniquely designed 42mm conical grinding wheel, complete with “blades” on top. Timemore refers to this as the “Spike-to-Cut” (or S2C) mechanism, which they suggest cuts the coffee beans before grinding. This, they believe, enhances the overall quality of the grind. While we don’t have the tools to verify this claim, we can confidently say that the grind produced by the Chestnut X is top-notch, resulting in superb espressos.

Your Handy, Practical Reservoir

The Timemore’s anodized aluminum reservoir is cleverly designed to streamline the transfer of ground coffee to the filter holder. This is achieved through a small ramp that ensures the coffee flows smoothly without any blockage. The unique screwing system is another standout feature. With just a quarter-turn, the receptacle locks securely in line with the grinder body, eliminating any chance of accidental unscrewing during use. Thomas, during his test, was particularly impressed by the reservoir’s surprisingly light weight. Despite this, the mill’s stability is not compromised. In fact, the Timemore outperforms the Kinu M47 Phoenix in terms of stability, even though the latter has a plastic tank.

Exploring the Concept of Half-Hearted Usage

Meet the Chestnut X, a top-tier mill brimming with innovative features. However, it does fall a bit short in terms of usability. Its performance is somewhat sluggish due to its 42 mm grinding wheel, which is slightly undersized for a manual grinder. In fact, it takes approximately 1 to 1 minute 20 seconds to grind 16g of coffee, making it less efficient than grinders equipped with 48mm wheels such as the Kingrinder K4 and K6 or the 1zpresso J-Max. Despite this, the design does have a notable benefit: it demands less effort to stabilize during use. Unlike the Apollo, for instance, the Timemore stays firmly in your grasp and requires minimal force to grind, even for finer textures.

The disassembly process is quite similar to the BPlus Apollo model. Gaining access to the grinder’s interior for cleaning purposes is a breeze. The grinder’s absolute setting feature makes it incredibly easy to revert to your previous setting, simplifying both maintenance and daily use. For a step-by-step guide, feel free to check out this Timemore Chesntut X disassembly video.

Wrapping Up

Wrapping up, the Timemore Chestnut X is a manual coffee grinder that beautifully marries innovation with high-end design. Its sleek aesthetics, robust aluminum build, precise adjustment capabilities, and the superior quality of the grind it produces make it a top pick for coffee connoisseurs. Whether you’re brewing an espresso or any other coffee variant, the Timemore Chestnut X is designed to meet your needs. However, it does have a slightly smaller grinder for espresso, so you might need a bit of patience for a finer grind. If you’re in the market for a premium manual coffee grinder that stands out with its innovative design, the Timemore Chestnut X is a fantastic option. That said, alternatives from 1zpresso and Kingrinder offer comparable performance and durability. Hence, we do question its position and price tag ($285 on Amazon) in the manual coffee grinder market for 2023.
