First introduced by the renowned Faema company in 1961, the E61 group has since become a hallmark feature of espresso coffee machines. It’s particularly celebrated for its pre-infusion system and its remarkable ability to maintain a consistent temperature, both of which significantly enhance the quality of coffee extraction. The E61 group employs a pump to sustain steady pressure and is typically constructed from chrome-plated brass, a material known for its excellent heat retention. Owing to these exceptional characteristics, espresso aficionados hold coffee machines equipped with the E61 group in high regard for their dependable performance and superior reliability.

Nonetheless, consistent upkeep is crucial for achieving peak performance, and that includes proper lubrication of the machine lever. In this piece, we’re going to guide you on how to effectively lubricate the lever of your E61 group coffee machine.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Properly Lubricate the Lever of Your E61 Coffee Machine

For a smooth operation of your E61 group coffee machine, it’s essential to regularly lubricate the lever. Start by turning off and unplugging the machine to ensure your safety. Next, detach the lever and meticulously clean all moving parts using a clean cloth. This step is crucial to get rid of any coffee residue and old grease that might hinder the machine’s performance. Then, apply a modest amount of food-grade lubricant—specifically formulated for coffee machines—to the moving parts, paying particular attention to the seals and lever pins. After this, carefully reattach the lever, making sure all parts are properly aligned and securely tightened. To finish off, turn the machine back on and operate the lever a few times to evenly distribute the lubricant.

Getting Started: What You’ll Need

For your safety and the best results, please ensure to carry out this operation on a machine that is not only switched off but also completely cooled down.

Let’s embark on a journey together as I guide you through the process on your Lelit Mara X V2. Ready? Let’s dive in!

A Closer Look at Each Stage

  • Start by unscrewing the lever with a large flathead screwdriver.
  • When the lever is released, you can see the brass water intake shaft, which will need lubricating.
  • Unscrew the large nut using a large wrench. Cover the wrench with several layers of duct tape to protect your coffee machine.
  • Once the nut has been removed, the shaft is completely free. Take a photo of the location of the water inlet pin to facilitate reassembly.
  • Lubricate the water inlet shaft.
  • The chamber after lubrication.
  • Remove the 3-way solenoid valve and lubricate it too.
  • As before, unscrew the pre-infusion valve using the flat wrench covered with rubber tape. Be careful, there’s a spring inside.
  • Lubricate the top of the spring (the pre-infusion valve).
  • Here’s what the disassembled components look like.
  • When reassembling, lift the lever (as if pouring water). The pre-infusion valve will be easier to reinstall as the spring will be released.

Here’s a handy snapshot illustrating the correct placement of the stem on my Mara X for when you’re putting it back together.

Wrapping It Up

This is a straightforward process that ensures the lever operates smoothly and without any annoying squeaks. After a comprehensive clean with a specialized coffee machine cleaner like Puly, you’ll often find this step to be absolutely essential.

We’re thrilled to provide this concise guide, designed to assist you in maximizing the benefits of your coffee machine! Enjoy!

Boasting standout features such as the E61 group, dual pressure gauges, and a whisper-quiet vibrating pump, this Lelit model already makes a strong impression on paper. But let’s not stop there. Let’s dive in further to uncover the additional treasures this Lelit machine holds for us.

Experience the Silence with Our Quiet Vibratory Pump

Despite being equipped with a vibrating pump, the Lelit Mara X is impressively quiet. Sure, it’s a smidge louder than a rotary pump, but it’s substantially less noisy than any other vibrating pump I’ve come across. If you’re intrigued, I encourage you to watch this enlightening video that compares the noise levels of the Lelit PL92T and the Lelit Mara X.

Exploring the Steam Nozzle and Hot Water Tap

Unlike some machines, such as the Bezzera Unica, the PL62X distinguishes itself with a unique feature – a separate steam nozzle and hot water tap. This thoughtful design offers significant advantages. To illustrate, let’s consider the Bezzera Unica. I remember a time when my father, trying to use the integrated hot water tap in the steam nozzle, unintentionally created a water jet so forceful that it splashed out all the coffee he was attempting to dilute. Fortunately, the clever design of the PL62X safeguards against such incidents, ensuring a more controlled and user-friendly experience.

Our machine’s steam nozzle is a marvel of versatility and power. Thoughtfully insulated everywhere except the tip, it guarantees your safety by preventing burns and keeps things tidy by ensuring milk doesn’t stick to the surface. It’s all about enhancing your experience with a touch of safety and cleanliness!

Similar to the faucet, the tap also boasts a multi-directional and insulated design. This ensures that you can operate it with ease and confidence, without the fear of scalding yourself.

Exploring the Temperature and Steam Mode Buttons

Upon removing the water drip tray, you’ll discover a versatile three-position switch located on the front of the machine. This convenient feature provides you with the flexibility to select from three distinct temperature settings, tailoring your experience to your preference.

  • Position 0: fairly hot (88 to 91°C), ideal for dark roasts.
  • Position I: hot (91 to 94°C), for medium roasts.
  • Position II: very hot (93 to 97°C), for light roasts.

Whenever I set my Mara X into action, it usually requires around 15 minutes to heat up and reach the ideal temperature.

Once you’ve gently taken out the water drip tray, you’ll find a surprise waiting for you! There’s another button nestled on the right-hand side of the machine, just ready for you to explore.

There are two delightful ways you can utilize this button:

  • Xmode Steam (I on the button) increases steam power after making a coffee.
  • Xmode Coffee (0 on the button) does not change the steam power after making a coffee. It promotes regularity in coffee brewing, especially when several coffees are made consecutively.

Delving into the world of steam power, you’ll find a distinct contrast between the two modes. Xmode Coffee holds its own when it comes to frothing milk, yet it’s evident that Xmode Steam outshines with its exceptional power. It operates as though it’s equipped with a boiler exclusively engineered for steam, positioning it as a top-tier choice.

After you’ve experienced the “Xmode Steam” feature, you’ll observe how promptly the machine’s heat exchanger returns to its initial temperature. This process becomes even speedier with a thorough flush!

The gifted developer who spearheads the open-source project “MaraX_Visualizer” has adeptly distilled the relevant data for our benefit.

Exploring the Water Tank

Lelit has ingeniously designed a water tank with two small handles, making it effortlessly easy to handle. To extend the lifespan of your machine and prevent issues such as limescale, we recommend using filter cartridges. In a thoughtful touch, Lelit has included graduations on the handles, enabling precise measurement of the filtered water, ensuring your machine remains in prime condition.

This impressive machine features a water tank that can comfortably hold up to 2.5 liters. If you’re just getting started with it, we recommend checking the water level in the tank. Remember, the machine’s boiler has a maximum capacity of 1.8 liters.

Exploring Sight Glasses and Pressure Gauges

The Lelit is thoughtfully designed with three convenient LED indicators for your ease of use:

Heating indicator for lelit mara X

Just a gentle reminder that your machine is in the process of warming up. It should reach the perfect temperature in about 15 minutes. Stay patient and excited!

Led for water supply to lelit mara x reservoir

Our thoughtful feature is designed to alert you when water is detected in the tank. Should the tank run dry, a flashing LED light will serve as a gentle reminder to refill. And, if you’re in the midst of brewing your favorite cup of coffee, there’s no need to fret. The machine is equipped with a small emergency reserve to guarantee that your brew is finished to perfection.

Indicateur d'allimentation de la lelit mara X

The PL62X comes with a cleverly designed LED light that surrounds the “on/off” button. This feature offers a clear and easy-to-understand visual indicator of whether the machine is powered on or off.

The lelit mara X features 3 leds

The dual pressure gauge is a handy tool that offers two essential pieces of data:

  • Steam : Indicates steam pressure.
  • Pump : Displays pump pressure. The pump is electronically equipped with an integrated pre-infusion function.

Comes with a Filter Holder and Tamper

Lelit has truly outdone themselves with their brilliantly engineered spouted filter holder. This masterfully crafted piece is designed to sit perfectly flat on your countertop, featuring a small, innovative wedge that ingeniously prevents the spouts from making direct contact with the surface. This clever feature not only keeps your countertop clean but also protects the spouts from potential damage. The filter holder’s dual spouts are conveniently positioned close together, offering flexibility for brewing into one or two cups. And the cherry on top? The filter holder comes complete with a full set of precision IMS filters, a brand that coffee aficionados around the globe trust and rely on.

Tamper supplied with machine.

The tamper, with a diameter of 58.55 mm, is very comfortable to hold. Its simplicity, with a red-painted wooden construction, makes it both effective and aesthetically pleasing. There’s no immediate cost to replace it.

For my part, I ended up opting for a tamper with a guide, the Normcore V4. I prefer a tamper with a guide because it allows uniform tamping and keeps channeling to a minimum.

Enhance Your PL62X Experience with Our Elegant Wooden Accessory Kit

Perhaps you’ve noticed a few unique details while examining pictures of my machine alongside those from the manufacturer. I’ve added a dash of personal flair by replacing the standard plastic elements such as taps, levers, and filter holders, with delightful wooden counterparts.

Lelit is the official seller of these items. Personally, I believe they greatly elevate the visual charm of the machine.

In my opinion, this tasteful upgrade not only elevates the machine’s elegance but also adds a touch of warmth and charm to it.

Exciting Opportunities for Improvement

A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Flow Control on Your Lelit Mara X V2

Meet the Bianca, the sophisticated older sibling of Mara X, which comes equipped with a standard flow control feature. Unfortunately, this handy tool isn’t a standard feature on the PL62X. However, don’t let this dissuade you! This accessory is incredibly useful, enabling you to monitor and tweak the extraction pressure in real-time. This opens up a whole new world of coffee aromas for you to explore. You can create and replicate extraction profiles to your heart’s delight, truly personalizing your coffee experience.

Are you on the hunt for a top-quality flow control device? I highly recommend you take a look at coffee-sensor. I personally sourced my own device from this site and was pleasantly surprised to find it was the most cost-effective choice at the time. They don’t just offer competitive pricing, their customer service is also exceptional. I’ve had multiple interactions with them and each time, they’ve been impressively prompt in their responses. What’s more, their after-sales service is truly praiseworthy – I can vouch for this as I had to request a replacement for another item I purchased from them.

Are you excited to begin the installation? Don’t worry, the procedure is quite simple and we’ve prepared a useful video tutorial for you right below. The only things you’ll require are some duct tape and a reliable, large wrench. So, shall we get started?

Discover Open Source Projects to Enhance Your PL62X Experience

If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled to know that there are several open source projects readily available here and there. These resources can guide you on how to add a PID and timer to your Lelit Mara X. I must admit, I haven’t had the opportunity to implement these modifications on my own machine yet, mainly due to a tight schedule.

Open source project that adds functionality to the machine.

Concluding Thoughts

At the attractive price of $1,130 on Amazon, this machine has truly won me over with its exceptional value for money. Its chic design adds a touch of elegance to my coffee nook, particularly with the charming wooden taps. Although it may not have all the cutting-edge features found in some of today’s premium coffee machines (which often come with a steeper price), it nonetheless provides a thorough, budget-friendly, and notably delightful user experience.

In my personal experience, the absence of a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller isn’t a disadvantage at all. With three temperature settings at your fingertips, you’re given the exciting opportunity to experiment and uncover the unique flavors that varying temperatures can coax from your coffee. Watching my father use a machine equipped with a PID, I’ve observed that the water temperature isn’t something that’s frequently tweaked in daily use. Therefore, having a selection of three temperatures, rather than ten, doesn’t truly restrict your coffee-making journey in any meaningful way.

Furthermore, this E61 model stands out as one of the most compact choices on the market, boasting a sleek profile of merely 22 cm in width. Don’t let its small size fool you though, it thoughtfully includes both a steam nozzle and a hot water tap for your convenience.

This exceptional machine is equipped with a high-quality filter holder, a comprehensive set of IMS filters, and a dependable tamper. So, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there are no hidden expenses to fret over in this regard.

The key to an impeccable espresso is nestled within the core of a superior coffee grinder. Together with my co-author, we’ve thoroughly tested a grinder that’s priced under $100, and it consistently produced exceptional results in every brew.

Embarking on your espresso adventure? I highly recommend you take a peek at this enlightening article. It’s brimming with useful advice to guide you away from the pitfalls of the channeling phenomenon. Enjoy your brewing journey!

The Bright Side

  • Price
  • Successful design
  • 22 cm wide
  • Heats up quickly
  • Numerous accessories
  • IMS filters

Areas for Improvement

  • PID

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
A near-perfect choice for this espresso machine. One could argue about Lelit’s choice to offer a selection between three temperatures rather than opt for the addition of a PID. However, as I explain, this is not a major constraint. The machine proves to be excellent, offering remarkable value for money.

Every espresso aficionado reaches a pivotal moment in their coffee journey – the decision to master the art of using a bottomless filter holder for their extractions. However, to brew a perfect, channeling-free espresso using this type of filter holder, there are a handful of essential rules to remember.

Let’s Start with the Basics: What Exactly is Channeling?

Channeling is a term used to describe the irregular flow of water through the coffee grind, a characteristic that is particularly linked to espresso extractions. This occurs as water instinctively takes the easiest route.

Let’s take an example:

When preparing your espresso, after tamping, if your coffee cake is not perfectly straight, one edge will be thinner than the other. This thinner edge offers less resistance to the passage of water. Most of the water will therefore flow down this path, creating a channel. The result? Over-extraction in the thinner zone and under-extraction in the thicker zones. This, of course, has repercussions on the aroma in the cup.

Employing a spouted filter holder might make it a bit tricky to detect channeling. But, when you switch to a bottomless filter holder, this occurrence becomes significantly more visible. You’ll witness a multitude of miniature jets bursting forth from all directions. While this spectacle is indeed captivating, it can also lead to a bit of a clean-up job on your coffee machine.

Having unraveled the mystery surrounding the concept of channeling, let’s delve into the thrilling ways you can tap into its immense potential.

Unraveling the Importance of Uniform Grind Distribution

Unlocking the secret to a perfect cup of coffee lies in the uniform distribution of your grind. This is the cornerstone of successful coffee extraction and the ultimate solution to avoid channeling. Picture this: if your coffee grind isn’t evenly dispersed before tamping, it could lead to areas with different densities. Such inconsistency might trigger channeling, leading to uneven extraction. But fear not, the illustration above paints a vivid image of this process. So, let’s embark on this journey of brewing exceptional coffee together!

In addition, the Ross drop method should be considered. This technique proves particularly effective in preventing the formation of lumps, avoiding the need to break them up using the WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) or tundish.

You have a delightful array of tools at your fingertips, all designed to help you distribute your coffee evenly before you begin the tamping process:

Minimize Channeling with the Use of a WDT:

The Weiss Distribution Technique, affectionately known as WDT, is a smart approach that uses needles to distribute coffee grounds uniformly, ensuring there are no clumps. This nifty tool can be either bought or even made at home if you’re in the mood for a little DIY project. All you need is a piece of wire and a cork. To ensure the best flexibility, a wire with a diameter of 0.3 mm is the ideal choice.

Looking to maintain a pristine workspace even while brewing your coffee? You might want to think about incorporating a funnel into your routine. This practical gadget is a fantastic ally in warding off those annoying spills on your countertop.

When it comes to my daily coffee ritual, I lean on the Nomcore WDT to guarantee a uniform distribution of my coffee. This nifty gadget features an array of needles that radiate from the handle, enabling it to encompass a wide surface area with each pass. What’s more, it’s entirely fashioned from aluminum, lending an air of elegance to its design. The cherry on top? It’s accompanied by a neat base that fits snugly into my coffee corner, helping to maintain a clean and orderly space.

Although the Normcore model I recommend might not be the most economical choice for such an accessory, rest assured there are plenty of other options that are kinder to your budget. I encourage you to discover these cost-effective alternatives on Amazon.

Master the Art of Using a Coffee Distributor for Ground Coffee

Let’s move on to our second accessory, the coffee distributor. This handy tool guarantees a perfectly even coffee grind before tamping. You may have heard it called by another name – that’s right, it’s also known as a “coffee distributor”.

Picture a multi-faceted wafer that gracefully stirs your coffee, rather than merely jabbing it with needles. That’s the magic of a coffee distributor! These handy tools have gained quite a popularity and are available in a wide array of price points, catering to all budget types. When you’re in the market for one, I’d recommend selecting a model with a bit of heft to it. This ensures it can effectively press into the coffee grounds. If it’s too lightweight, you may find yourself needing to apply extra pressure to get it to rotate properly.

From my personal experience, I’ve found the WDT to be an indispensable tool in my coffee-making arsenal. However, unlike the versatile WDT, the splitter’s compatibility is limited to filters that align with its specific diameter. For example, I have a 51.5 mm splitter for my La Pavoni, but unfortunately, it doesn’t play well with my Lelit Mara X V2 that requires a 58 mm filter. On another note, the tundish is a nifty device made up of three components that can be screwed together, offering the flexibility of depth adjustment. However, there’s a minor hiccup – ground coffee can sometimes sneak between these components, causing a bit of retention. While this retention is quite negligible, it’s always a good idea to steer clear of it if you can.

Become a Pro at the Art of Packing

Getting the perfect tamp is key to ensuring a balanced water flow through your coffee. If your coffee puck isn’t perfectly flat after tamping, you might run into some problems. You see, water is a bit like us – it always looks for the easiest way out. So, it will naturally flow through the thinnest part of the coffee puck first. This uneven flow can lead to over-extraction, a coffee faux pas that can take a toll on the taste and quality of your brew.

Without a tamper guide, mastering the art of packing straight might seem daunting. However, rest assured that with practice and experience, this task will soon become as natural as breathing. Before you know it, incorrect packing will be nothing more than a distant memory.

When it comes to the art of tamping, positioning is key. Ideally, your filter holder should be kept upright. A simple solution is to rest it on the edge of your workspace. But for an even smoother experience, consider using a practical docking station. It’s a game-changer!

Are you contemplating an investment in a tamper with a guide? If that’s the case, I’m thrilled to recommend two exceptional models for your consideration:

Both products certainly bring a lot to the table, but if I had to pick a favorite, I’d lean towards the Normcore tamper. Let me share with you why:

  • choose the force applied when tamping (by replacing springs)
  • It has a guide
  • It covers all the diameters on the market (and comes in 58.5 mm, unlike the MHW 3Bomber tamper), etc.

Choosing the ideal tamper is truly a matter of personal preference. Seek out a tool that not only aligns with your aesthetic sensibilities, but also provides a comfortable grip and ease of use.

Solving the Mystery: How to Eliminate the Crater in Your Coffee Cake?

Have you ever noticed your coffee machine’s spray head releasing a water jet so powerful that it creates a crater in your coffee cake? If so, we have a simple and effective solution for you – a puck screen. This ingenious device, essentially a metal mesh, gently disperses the water jet for a more uniform distribution over your coffee cake. The result? It not only minimizes channeling but also keeps your machine’s spray head sparkling clean by warding off coffee ground accumulation. For a smoother, cleaner coffee experience, why not give this puck screen a try?

Have you thought about trying out a puck screen? It’s designed with several layers of mesh to ensure top-notch performance. Just to give you an idea, the one I personally use is 1.7 mm thick and it’s been working like a charm.

After tamping, I place the puck-screen directly on the coffee cake.
after using the puck screen, the hand shower is clean

Master the Art of Grinding for Your Ideal Cup of Coffee

Just as the freshness of your coffee beans plays a pivotal role in brewing the perfect cup, the quality of your grind is equally significant to avoid channeling. The grind size should be customized not only to your espresso machine but also to the specific type of coffee you’re using. A grind that’s too fine may cause over-extraction, leading to a bitter taste, while a grind that’s too coarse could result in under-extraction, giving you a weak and watery espresso.

It’s an undeniable truth that a superior coffee grinder is the key to achieving the perfect grind. When it comes to crafting my espresso, I wholeheartedly endorse the Niche Zero electric coffee grinder. But wait, there’s more – I also have a pair of reliable hand grinders at my disposal: the KINGrinder and the Apollo from BPlus. These are my faithful companions in my quest for the ultimate coffee experience.

The consequences of too fine a grind for espresso extraction

If your grind is too fine, the water will block, seek to circulate and end up doing so, creating the channels I mentioned at the beginning of the article. This means that, after a time that is probably too long for your extraction, the channeling effect will affect the flavours in the cup. In extreme cases, if the grind was really too fine, you can see this by breaking the cake of coffee grounds in half after extraction: some areas will be drier than others.

The effects of a coarse grind on espresso extraction

If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through the coffee cake too easily, resulting in overall under-extraction. This is reflected in the cup, with a less aromatic coffee.

Bringing It All Together

Preparing your espresso is an art that demands consistency and precision, especially when you’re working with professional-grade equipment. Remember, even the tiniest variation can have a substantial effect on your brew’s extraction process, altering the taste and quality of your espresso.
