Creating that flawless cup of coffee involves more than just picking the best beans. As any coffee aficionado would tell you, the exactness of water temperature and the precision of pouring are vital elements in the art of coffee brewing. In this engaging read, we’ll delve into an in-depth review of the Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle. We’ll examine its features and evaluate how they can enhance your coffee tasting experience. Additionally, we’ll shed light on any potential drawbacks that might sway your buying decision.
Experience the Blend of Elegance and Ergonomics
Whether you choose it in classic white or sophisticated black, the Fellow Stagg EKG kettle is sure to catch your eye with its sleek, contemporary design. Its graceful silhouette, complemented by a polished stainless steel finish, exudes a luxurious aesthetic. The kettle’s ergonomic handle and electric base enhance its functionality, ensuring a comfortable grip. For those who prefer a touch of nature, a pro model is available, featuring handles crafted from wood instead of plastic.
Achieve Perfect Temperature Precision
The Fellow Stagg EKG kettle boasts a standout feature – its meticulous temperature control. This kettle is designed with connoisseurs in mind, those who appreciate that the perfect water temperature is key to unlocking the full spectrum of coffee aromas. These aficionados know that the right temperature is essential for achieving the best coffee extraction. The built-in LCD display allows you to keep an eye on the water temperature, in either °C or °F, as it happens. This ensures you have complete command over your brewing process.
Remember to keep your kettle powered even in standby mode. If not, it might forget the temperature you’ve set earlier and automatically revert to its default setting of a piping hot 212°F. So, to keep your preferred temperature intact, don’t unplug it!
You’ll find two buttons conveniently positioned at the back of the base:
- HOLD toggle : Allows you to place the kettle in “hold” mode, maintaining its temperature for 60 minutes. Otherwise, the Fellow automatically switches to stand-by mode after 15 minutes of inactivity.
- F/C toggle: Selects the temperature unit displayed in °C or °F.
Adjusting the temperature is as easy as turning the knob located on the front panel. One delightful feature that truly stands out is the kettle’s quietness once it reaches the set temperature. This is a refreshing change from other models that tend to make a loud, piercing noise at the end of each heating cycle. The Fellow, on the other hand, maintains a pleasant discretion.
One feature that truly stands out and deserves appreciation is the kettle’s detachable design. Once the desired temperature is achieved, you can easily lift the kettle off its base. This is particularly handy when you want to pour hot water over your utensils to pre-warm them. What’s even better is that upon returning the kettle to its base, it doesn’t shut off. Instead, it continues to keep the water at the set temperature. This thoughtful feature significantly enhances user convenience, making the experience all the more enjoyable.
Experience Precision Pouring with Our Gooseneck Spout
The gooseneck spout isn’t just a stylish addition to your coffee maker. It’s a crucial component that enhances the gentle extraction process. This design allows for meticulous and controlled pouring of water, guaranteeing an even saturation of your ground coffee.
When it comes to brewing a perfect cup of V60 coffee, this feature is your best friend. The V60 method is all about precision and control, and this feature lets you adjust the water temperature to your liking. This gives you the freedom to experiment and discover the various flavor profiles hidden within your V60 coffee. Happy brewing!
Mastering the Art of Brewing with the Fellow Stagg EKG and a V60
Once I’ve warmed up the Fellow to my preferred temperature, which is a toasty 199°F, I then pre-wet the V60 to ensure all the equipment is nicely heated. The great thing is, when I place the kettle back on its base, it keeps the water at the perfect temperature for me.
While we wait, I take the time to carefully measure out the coffee. I then lightly moisten it to avoid any retention, using the RDT method. Once that’s done, it’s time to grind the coffee using my trusty KINGrinder K6 (you can find my review here).
Once I’ve freshly ground my coffee using the superb KINGrinder K6, I carefully transfer it to the V60. Then, with the precision of the kettle’s gooseneck spout, I gently pour the hot water over the coffee, ensuring every grain is perfectly saturated.
With careful attention to the timer on the scale and a precise adjustment of water as per my recipe, I successfully complete the preparation of my delightful coffee.
Don’t worry if your scale doesn’t come with a stopwatch feature, your kettle has got you covered! It has a built-in stopwatch that’s easy to use. To activate it, all you need to do is press the knob and hold it for about 5 seconds. Once you do this, a 3-second countdown will pop up, signaling the start of the stopwatch. It’s as simple as that!
Exploring the Areas for Improvement in the Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle
For those with a passion for coffee, the Fellow Stagg EKG Kettle is a fantastic option. However, during my personal use, I observed a minor issue that might impact your experience. Specifically, the kettle tends to leak water through the stopper if it’s tilted too much. But don’t worry! By handling it gently and refraining from tilting it excessively, you can easily avoid this hiccup.
Wrapping It Up
Despite its premium price tag, the Fellow Stagg EKG is a worthy investment for coffee enthusiasts. Its gooseneck spout is a game-changer for slow extraction methods like the V60. One of its standout features is its ability to retain heat even after being detached from the base, eliminating the need for constant reheating. Its sleek, modern design and silent operation seamlessly blend with your home decor. However, be mindful not to tilt the kettle too much as it may cause a slight water leakage from the cap – a minor inconvenience in an otherwise exceptional product.
For a longer lifespan, I’d suggest using filtered water. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference!
The Bright Side
- Modern design
- Noble materials
- Easy to handle
- Gooseneck spout
- Quiet
- Does not switch off when picked up and placed back on the base (useful if hot water is poured into the cup at the start of preparation)
- Temperature adjustable down to the degree
- Presence of a stopwatch
Areas for Improvement
- The price is still high for a kettle
- Due to its design, if it is tilted too much, a few drops of water will escape from the cap.
Therefore, I’m delighted to award it a score of 4.5 out of 5.
Consider the Fellow Stagg EKG Pro as another excellent option. This model showcases significant enhancements in temperature control and design. Its standout feature is the replacement of plastic handles with wooden ones, infusing a dash of sophistication into its overall look.
Mastering the Art of Playing “Wormy” with Your Friends
Here’s a fun tidbit for you! Did you know that you can actually play a version of the classic game Snake on your Fellow Stagg EKG kettle? Here’s how you can do it:
- Turn on your kettle.
- Remove the kettle from its base.
- Move the temperature switch on the back of the base back and forth.
- When Wormy appears, turn the wheel to play.
Without a doubt, this new feature is bound to captivate the tech enthusiasts among you.
