In my recent conversations with Wacaco, I expressed my curiosity about the Wacaco Exagrind travel coffee grinder. They kindly agreed to send me one for review. I want to assure you that this review is completely independent, free from any directives or influence from Wacaco. As a passionate coffee lover who has evaluated numerous grinders, I view this as a fantastic chance to once again share my insights and expertise with you.

Exploring the Design of the Wacaco Exagrind Travel Mill

What’s Inside the Box?

With the Wacaco coffee grinder, you’ll receive a compact carrying case for easy transportation, a handy cleaning brush to keep it in top shape, and a user manual in multiple languages to guide you through its use.

Exploring the Crank Handle

Just a few weeks prior to getting my hands on this grinder, I had purchased the Timemore C3 ESP Pro. My aim was to find a compact grinder that would be perfect for brewing coffee on the go. Now, having experienced both, I can confidently say that the Wacaco Exagrind is significantly more compact than the Timemore. What sets this grinder apart is its unique crank handle. It folds down completely, which is a fantastic space-saving feature.

When you fold the crank, a rubber stop is there to ensure that the metal part of the crank doesn’t touch the body of the mill. It’s a neat little feature that helps protect your mill from any potential damage.

While operating the machine, you may initially perceive the handle’s shape as potentially uncomfortable for cranking. Surprisingly though, the handle is remarkably comfortable to grip, simplifying the process of grinding coffee.

Wacaco has cleverly incorporated a petite magnet into the crank handle to simplify storage. When the handle is positioned atop the mill, a gentle magnetic pull secures the assembly neatly in place. But that’s not all! Wacaco has also thoughtfully included an elastic band. This band restricts the crank from wobbling haphazardly when stored, guaranteeing an even firmer hold.

Let’s shine a spotlight on another noteworthy feature – the handle’s ball-bearing attachment system. This ingenious design guarantees a smooth rotation and ensures the handle can’t be easily removed just by pulling on it. This is a stark contrast to the clip systems employed by some rival brands, which are less sturdy. The clip-on models often run the risk of the handle coming loose, leaving users with no choice but to reach out to the after-sales service. Wacaco clearly distinguishes itself with the durability of its system, earning it a big thumbs-up.

Exploring the Structure of the Mill

The mill features a silicone-coated aluminum body that not only feels comfortable in your hand but also prevents any slippage while you’re using it. Adding a unique touch, Wacaco has chosen a dodecagon design (that’s 12 sides for those counting), giving a nod to the distinctive Pipamoka style, instead of the traditional round body.

From my personal experience, I’ve found the grip to be incredibly comfortable. The mill stays remarkably stable during use, refusing to spin on its own. This stability can be attributed to the high-quality materials used in its construction and its thoughtfully designed ergonomic shape.

Exploring the Adjustment Wheel

Located at the base of the mill, right on the grinding wheel, you’ll find the adjustment wheel. It boasts 30 clicks per revolution, each click creating a gap of 33 µm. To help you navigate, Wacaco has thoughtfully provided directional indicators, guiding you on which way to turn the wheel for a coarser or finer grind. However, it’s a bit disappointing that the manufacturer didn’t include graduations. This means you’ll need to count the number of clicks from zero (with zero being the point where the grinding wheels touch) to find your preferred setting.

Let’s dive into the recommended settings based on the type of extraction (as suggested by the manufacturer):

  • Espresso : 10 to 20 clicks from zero
  • Filter coffee : 20 to 26 clicks from zero
  • For over: 34 to 42 clicks from zero
  • French press: 42 to 46 clicks since zero

Exploring the Grinding Wheel

With a standard measurement of 38 mm, the grindstone is perfectly suited for grinders with bottom adjustment. When compared to some of my other conical grinders, such as the Timemore S3, C3 ESP Pro, and the Apollo from Bplus, the Wacaco Exagrind truly shines. Its standout feature is its ability to produce a thick, exceptionally even grind. It’s clear to me that Wacaco has thoughtfully designed this mill with a specific purpose in mind – to cater to extractions that require a thick grind. The grinding wheel design has been optimized to achieve this very goal.

Getting to Know the Recipient

From my observations, the quality of a mill’s container can often provide insight into its overall design. Take the Kinu Phoenix for instance. It comes with a plastic container that’s a tad too light, which can cause the grinder to lose balance when it’s set on a work surface. Conversely, the C40 features an inner rim that tends to hold onto the coffee, making it a bit tricky to pour into the filter.

Unlike other models, the Wacaco Exagrind features a container with no internal rim, effectively eliminating coffee retention. Its well-balanced weight distribution lowers the center of gravity, providing excellent stability. In contrast to the 1Zpresso models, the screw-fastening system of the Wacaco Exagrind enhances the overall robustness of the unit.

Moreover, the bottom of the container is thoughtfully equipped with a rubber coating. This feature not only safeguards your workspace but also reflects the meticulous attention to detail in the design.

Mastering Espresso Extraction with the Wacaco Exagrind

Creating the perfect espresso using a semi-professional machine, such as my Lelit Mara X V2, can be a bit tricky when paired with the Wacaco Exagrind. Despite both the Wacaco and the Timemore C3 ESP Pro having 30 clicks per revolution, the difference lies in the gap per click. The Wacaco has a gap of 33 µm, while the Timemore has a slightly smaller gap of 23.5 µm.

The discrepancy of 9.5 µm can be attributed to the sharper thread angle found on the Wacaco. This design feature leads to a more expansive gap between each click, which unfortunately, can compromise the precision of the espresso setting. At times, the gap between two clicks may be too wide to pinpoint the optimal setting. I frequently found myself feeling as though the ideal setting was nestled somewhere between two clicks.

While it’s possible to make up for this by tweaking other factors, like the amount of coffee you use, this does pose a significant constraint if you’re specifically looking to use it for espresso. If you’re on the hunt for a grinder that’s perfectly tailored for espresso, I’d suggest considering the 1Zpresso J-Ultra or the Kingrinder K6.

When I previously discussed the grinding wheel, I mentioned that Wacaco seems to have designed this travel grinder with a specific purpose in mind. It doesn’t appear to be intended for professional espresso making. Instead, it’s more suited for preparations that require a coarse grind.

Crafting Espresso with the Lelit Mara X V2

Allow me to show you how an espresso is made using my Lelit Mara X V2 and the robust Wacaco Exagrind.

The images clearly illustrate that achieving a flawless espresso extraction is entirely feasible. When it comes to the aroma, the coffee presents a sweeter profile, exhibiting less acidity compared to when I use my Varia VS3 electric grinder.

Savoring Espresso Brewed with the Wacaco Minipresso GR2

Wacaco was kind enough to send me their compact Wacaco Minipresso GR2 coffee machine, which I’ve been using to create delightful coffee extractions. I found that the Wacaco Exagrind pairs perfectly with it.

Feel free to explore the comprehensive review of the Wacaco Minipresso GR2 right here. To be honest, the pairing of Exagrind / GR2 is simply perfect for those on the go. Interestingly, the GR2 demands less precision than my semi-professional espresso machine to achieve a successful extraction.

Exploring Filter Coffee Extraction with the Exagrind

Just as you’d anticipate, the Wacaco Exagrind works wonders when used for V60, Aeropress, or French Press extractions. The grind it produces is consistently even, allowing the full, rich aroma of the coffee to shine through.

Here’s where the Wacaco Exagrind truly shines. When I’m on the go, I typically rely on my Aeropress Go or my Wacaco Pipamoka. These methods are simpler and more straightforward for achieving a successful extraction. But the superior grind quality and compact size of the Exagrind have won me over completely. It’s now my go-to grinder for all my travel adventures.

Mastering the Art of Extraction with Aeropress Go

If you’re curious to learn more about how I extract coffee using my Aeropress Go, feel free to delve into my comprehensive article on the subject. You can find it right here.

For my brew, I opted for 15 g of finely ground coffee, using a 19-click setting on my trusty Wacaco Exagrind. When it came to the infusion process, I decided to follow a recipe from one of the Aeropress world champions for that perfect cup.

Exploring the V60 Infusion Method

When it comes to brewing my coffee, I follow the expert advice of James Hoffmann. I use a V60 and meticulously grind 15 g of coffee using the Wacaco Exagrind, set precisely to 26 clicks. It’s a method that never fails to produce a perfect cup!

Here’s a handy hint for you: I’ve found a fantastic use for the Kinto Unitea teapot. When you take out the tea filter, it transforms into a pourer that’s perfectly compatible with a V60. Give it a try!

The outcome is truly fascinating. The grind is ideally tailored for extractions that call for a coarse grind.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Dismantling and Cleaning Your Wacaco Exagrind

Putting the mill back together and giving it a good clean is incredibly straightforward. Let’s walk through the steps in detail:

  1. Completely unscrew the adjustment knob to release the grinding wheel.
  2. Remove the central rod to gain access to the interior of the mill.
  3. Clean the inside of the grinder with a brush or dry cloth to remove any coffee residue.
  4. Reassemble the mill in the reverse order : replace the central spindle, reinstall the grinding wheel, then screw back the adjustment knob.

By following these steps, you can ensure the mill’s maintenance is both quick and effortless. This not only guarantees its longevity but also enhances its performance.

Wrapping Up

The Wacaco Exagrind truly shines in its role as a compact travel mill, courtesy of its fully retractable crank handle. It’s evident that Wacaco has poured a lot of thought and care into every detail to deliver a product of superior quality. When you use it, you’ll enjoy a comfortable grip, a sense of durability, and outstanding grinding performance.

Unlike certain manufacturers who choose to create “hybrid” grinders, Wacaco has intentionally designed its grinder to shine in the realm of coarse grinds. In the coffee connoisseur’s world, there are grinders specifically tailored for certain types of coffee, such as the 1Zpresso J-Ultra, which is optimized for espresso. The Wacaco Exagrind follows a similar philosophy, but its specialty is coarse grinds. “Hybrid” grinders, while versatile and capable of producing a range of grinds, don’t particularly excel in any one area. They provide satisfactory results for both espresso and pour-over coffee, but they can’t compete with the superior performance of specialized grinders.

Pro Tip: Enhance your coffee grinding experience by adding just 2 or 3 drops of water to your coffee beans prior to grinding. This clever trick, referred to as RDT (Ross Droplet Technique), effectively minimizes the static electricity that often leads to clumpy coffee grinds…

As a frequent business traveler with a growing fondness for travel coffee machines, I recently decided to invest in the Timemore C3 ESP Pro coffee grinder. This intriguing gadget came highly recommended by several acquaintances who couldn’t be happier with their purchase. I want to clarify that this article isn’t sponsored by Timemore – I bought the grinder myself for personal use. My goal is to provide you with the most thorough and unbiased review I possibly can.

Exploring the Design of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro

Exploring the Folding Crank

As an enthusiast of travel mills, I was instantly drawn to the Timemore range due to its unique feature – the folding crank. This is a significant advantage that sets it apart. Since this system is patented, it’s hard to find any other brand that offers a similar feature. Some might bring up the 1Zpresso brand, which also has a folding crank. However, the key difference is in its compactness: when folded, the 1Zpresso crank still occupies some space. In contrast, the Timemore’s crank neatly tucks into the body of the mill, making it a more space-efficient choice.

The handle of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro is crafted entirely from stainless steel and seamlessly integrates with the aluminum cap. Despite its compact size, this handle provides an exceptional grip. It’s uniquely designed with a ball bearing system, setting it apart from competitors like 1Zpresso, Kingrinder, and El Comandante C40, which use a clip system. The exemplary build quality of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro not only ensures durability but also prevents the handle from accidentally detaching from the crank.

When you fold the crank, a rubber stop is there to ensure that the metal part of the crank doesn’t touch the body of the mill. It’s a neat little feature that helps protect your mill!

Just a quick heads-up for all you coffee enthusiasts out there! At Timemore, when you see the “Pro” label, it signifies the inclusion of a handy folding crank. Interestingly, there’s another variant of this mill, known as the Timemore C3 ESP. It’s a more budget-friendly option, but please be aware that it does not come with a folding crank.

Another noteworthy feature of Timemore’s mills is the ball-bearing mounting of the handle. This design ensures a smooth rotation of the handle and safeguards it from being accidentally detached by a simple pull. This is a significant improvement over other brands that use a clip system, which can be less secure. With a clip attachment, there’s a heightened chance of the handle becoming loose, leading some users to seek help from after-sales service. This is where Timemore shines, offering a superior and reliable solution.

Exploring the Structure of the Mill

The body of the mill is crafted entirely from aluminum. This sets it apart from other brands that typically choose a completely smooth body, necessitating a rubber ring to enhance grip and stop the mill from slipping. In contrast, Timemore has opted for a grooved surface. From my personal experience, I find the grip to be quite comfortable. Moreover, the mill remains stable during use, not spinning on its own due to this innovative design, even with the torque produced by the grinding process.

Exploring the Adjustment Wheel

Unlike its larger counterpart, the Timemore S3, the C3 ESP Pro features its adjustment knob directly on the grinding wheels, offering a unique design twist.

Just like the C40’s “Red Clix” kit that enhances the number of clicks available, the Timemore C3/C3S models provide a robust 12 clicks per revolution. However, the C3 ESP model steps it up a notch with a whopping 30 clicks, mirroring the functionality of a mill equipped with the C40’s kit.

The Timemore C3 ESP is designed with precision in mind, offering an adjustment granularity of 23.3 µm for each click. This feature ensures you can fine-tune your settings to achieve the perfect grind every time.

Let’s dive into the recommended settings based on the type of extraction you’re performing:

Here’s how you can interpret the setting position: the first number represents the total number of full rotations you need to make with the setting wheel. The second number, on the other hand, indicates the specific graduation mark where you should stop after completing the full turns. To illustrate, if the setting is 1.6, this means you should make one full rotation with the dial, and then halt at the 6th graduation mark.

  • Espresso: graduation 0.3 to 1.0
  • Moka Pot: graduation 1.0 to 1.7
  • AeroPress: scale 9 to 25
  • For Over: graduation 1.1 to 2.4
  • French Press: graduation 1.9 to 2.5

Introducing the S2C600 Grinding Wheel

Meet the Timemore’s S2C600 millstone, a remarkable evolution of the C2C800. This innovative design was previously featured in the now-retired Timemore Chestnut X mill. The latest generation, the S2C600, now graces several mills in the Timemore lineup, including the Timemore S3, which I had the pleasure of testing a few months ago.

I was already quite taken with the Chestnut X‘s grinding wheel, which demonstrated a remarkable ability to produce an even grind. Now, Timemore has taken things up a notch, enhancing the grind consistency even further in this latest version.

Introducing the Recipient

From my personal experience, I’ve found that the quality of a mill’s container often mirrors the overall craftsmanship and design of the mill itself. Take the Kinu Phoenix for instance. Its plastic container is a tad too light, which unfortunately causes the mill to lose its balance when set on a work surface. Conversely, the C40 features a rim on the inside of its container. While this may seem like a minor detail, it actually leads to coffee retention when you’re transferring the grounds into the filter.

When it comes to the Timemore grinder, one of its standout features is the absence of an internal rim in the container, which eliminates the possibility of coffee getting stuck. Additionally, its substantial weight contributes to stabilizing the grinder by lowering its center of gravity. This is a unique feature not found in other models, such as those from 1Zpresso. Another noteworthy aspect is the screw-fastened design of the container, which enhances its durability.

Finally, a thoughtful detail to note is the addition of a rubber insert strategically positioned beneath the container. This not only safeguards your worktop but also speaks volumes about the meticulous attention given to the design.

Mastering Espresso Extraction with the Timemore C3 ESP Pro

While the Timemore S3 left me somewhat underwhelmed when it came to espresso, the Timemore C3 ESP Pro truly shines in this department. To illustrate, let’s take a look at an example from a La Pavoni machine.

First, I carefully measure out 16 g of coffee. To ensure a smooth grind and reduce static cling, I lightly mist the coffee with water using the RDT technique. Then, I proceed to grind the coffee using the reliable Timemore grinder.

So, here we have the outcome you’ve been waiting for.

While it’s certainly feasible to whip up espressos using this grinder, the Timemore C3 ESP Pro wouldn’t be my top pick for this particular brewing method. The primary reason lies in the size of the grindstones, 38 mm. This size significantly extends the grinding time when compared to mills fitted with larger grindstones, like the Kingrinder K6 or the pricier 1Zpresso J-Ultra.

Experience the magic of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro! It may take me just a tad over a minute to grind an espresso, but when I switch to the 47 or 48 mm wheels, I can cut that time down to approximately 40 seconds. It’s all about efficiency and flavor!

Experience the Superiority of the Timemore C3 ESP Pro on the Go

In my experience, Timemore truly shines when it comes to extractions that require a coarser grind. This is a stark contrast to competing brands like 1Zpresso, which, in my opinion, seems to have a particular knack for espresso.

Rest assured, the grind you’ll achieve with the Timemore is exceptionally consistent, a testament to the brand’s proficiency. Whether you’re brewing with a V60 or using my personal favorite, the travel-friendly Pipamoka (which incidentally, is why I purchased this grinder), I believe it strikes the perfect balance.

With the 38 mm grinding wheel, this type of extraction is a breeze. The mill operates swiftly, producing a robust grind without any hassle.

Let’s dive into the key steps for brewing a perfect cup of coffee using the Wacaco Pipamoka:

With these straightforward steps, you’ll be able to whip up a delicious cup of quality coffee in no time, even when you’re on the go.

Grind 14 g of coffee using the Timemore C3 ESP Pro: I recommend using the 1.9 setting. This means you’ll need to make one full turn of the setting wheel, then adjust it to position 9.

So, here we have the outcome:

A Step-by-Step Guide to Dismantling and Cleaning Your Timemore C3 ESP Pro

Putting the mill back together and giving it a good clean is incredibly straightforward. Let’s dive into the step-by-step process:

  1. Unscrew the adjustment knob completely to release the grinding wheel.

Wrapping It Up

I purchased the Chestnut C3 ESP Pro coffee grinder primarily for my travel needs. It’s a perfect companion for my compact travel coffee machine, the Wacaco Pipamoka. What really impressed me about this grinder were its compact size, affordable price, excellent build quality, and consistent grind.

I believe it’s especially well-suited for filter coffee, thanks to its compact grinding wheel. However, don’t let its size fool you! It’s also quite proficient at whipping up espressos, albeit with a slightly longer grinding time.

When it comes to comparing Timemore mills, I have a distinct preference for the C3 ESP Pro over the S3. While the S3 may be more robust and features a larger grinding wheel, it falls short when it comes to making espressos, a task at which the C3 ESP Pro excels. If you’re on the hunt for a grinder that’s even more compact, I invite you to read my review of the Wacaco Exagrinder, a model designed specifically with this in mind.

With that in mind, I’m delighted to award it a 5-star rating.

Recently, I’ve realized that I frequently suggest the 1Zpresso J-Ultra as a top-notch espresso grinder. However, I noticed that I hadn’t yet provided any user feedback for you. In reality, I’m already a proud owner of the J-Ultra’s elder sibling, the J-Max. The sole distinction between these two grinders is that one features a retractable crank, while the other does not.

The creation of this retractable crank handle is a fascinating tale of resilience and innovation. It all began when a rival German brand sought to hinder 1Zpresso’s European sales by filing a lawsuit over the handle’s design. Consequently, 1Zpresso had to adapt and redesign the crank handle on several of its grinders, including the J-Max. This led to the birth of the J-Ultra, a grinder that continues to be a popular choice in Europe. But that’s not all, 1Zpresso boasts a wide range of coffee grinders, each with its unique features. You can explore them all here.

I’ve recently acquired the J-Ultra, and I’m excited to share it with you.

Discovering the Magic Inside the 1Zpresso J-Ultra Box

Our coffee grinder includes a variety of handy accessories:

  • Carrying case
  • Brush for cleaning the mill
  • Small bellows
  • Silicone strap, to be fitted on the mill according to your choice
  • Card with QR code, redirecting to instructions for use

Discover top-notch accessories.

Exploring the Design of the 1Zpresso J-Ultra

The moment you lay your hands on the J-Ultra, you’re instantly enveloped by a feeling of superior quality. To be frank, it’s immediately clear that it’s not playing in the same field as the Kingrinder I reviewed earlier. But before we delve into the specifics of each component, let’s start with my overall impression.

The 1Zpresso boasts a robust weight, ensuring stability during use. Its magnetic container is securely fastened with an array of magnets, providing a firm hold. The grinder is well balanced, designed with a low center of gravity to prevent any accidental toppling. The adjustment knob is a joy to use, offering a satisfying resistance with each click. With its ultra-fine settings of 8 µm, the 1Zpresso is a coffee grinder specifically tailored for espresso.

Exploring the Key Features of Your Coffee Grinder

Let’s dive into the key features of the 1Zpresso J-Ultra manual coffee grinder:

  • Precise adjustment: 8 microns per click.
  • Wheels: 48 mm wheels, optimized for espresso.
  • Materials: Wood, polycarbonate, silicone, stainless steel, aluminum alloy.
  • Ergonomic design: rounded body for a comfortable grip.
  • Magnetic container: Secure attachment and easy removal.
  • Weight and dimensions: 700g, 19 x 18.5 x 5.5 cm, 35-40g capacity.
  • Accessories: Cleaning brush, blower, carrying case.
  • Warranty: One year, defects in materials and workmanship.

Discover the J-Ultra Crank Handle

If you’re a keen follower of coffee industry updates, you might be aware of the recent controversy involving 1Zpresso. This company found itself in hot water with a competing German manufacturer who lodged a complaint against them. The bone of contention? A crank handle design that was strikingly similar to their own. Rising to the challenge, 1Zpresso swiftly redesigned their crank handle, not only changing its shape but also making it retractable. Despite these changes, some 1Zpresso products, like the J-Max, had to be pulled off the shelves due to the crank handle issue.

One unique feature of the J-Ultra is its integrated crank handle, which is cleverly built into the cap – one of the few plastic components of the mill. This foldable design is a first for me from 1Zpresso, and it certainly lends a robust feel to the mill. However, I must admit, I find it not as user-friendly as the Timemore system. It’s possible that 1Zpresso couldn’t incorporate the Timemore system due to patent restrictions or lack of agreements. The ability to retract the crank is a significant plus, as it allows the mill to be more compact and maintain better balance.

Experience a new level of comfort with the redesigned crank handle, meticulously crafted to provide an exceptional grip. Its broad and ergonomic design ensures a smooth coffee grinding experience. While earlier 1Zpresso models echoed the design of the El Comandante C40 crank handle, the latest design draws inspiration from theBPlus Apollo.

Exploring the Design of the J-Ultra Coffee Grinder

1Zpresso coffee grinders are delightfully user-friendly. The J-Ultra model gives me the same satisfying experience as the other models I’ve tested, such as the JE-Plus and J-Max. The tactile texture around the mill ensures a superb grip, making additional silicone straps for a better hold unnecessary, unlike with the BPlus’ Apollo model.

The external adjustment knob is subtly prominent, offering a firm hold that ensures the mill stays securely in your grasp. This is a thoughtful enhancement from the Timemore Chestnut X, where I previously observed this issue.

Exploring the Magnetic Container of the 1Zpresso J-Ultra

The design of the magnetic container for collecting ground coffee is truly ingenious. It’s equipped with a multitude of magnets that firmly secure it to the grinder, ensuring it stays put even during vigorous grinding. Its substantial weight contributes to the overall stability of the grinder, maintaining balance even when the crank is fully extended. This is a noteworthy feature, especially considering the tilting issues I’ve noticed with the Timemore Chestnut X when the crank isn’t retracted. Additionally, the container is thoughtfully fitted with a rubber pad at the bottom, providing a safeguard against any potential damage to your countertop.

The manufacturer has thoughtfully designed the container with a subtle incline, extending from the base to the magnets, to ensure no ground coffee gets left behind. This clever design feature sets it apart from other manufacturers. It effectively eliminates the issue of coffee getting stuck while being transferred into the filter holder, a common problem I’ve noticed with models like the C40 and Kinu.

One aspect of this container that I truly admired is the magnetic attachment feature. The clever addition of a recess in its design ensures that the container stays firmly in place, even when pressure is applied at an angle while the mill is operating. This thoughtful design significantly reduces the chances of the container accidentally detaching under such conditions.

Exploring the Adjustment Wheel

Perched atop the grinder, you’ll find the adjustment knob, conveniently located on the exterior. This knob allows for a wheel spacing of 8 µm per click, a level of precision that is a perfect match for espresso preparation, promising an exceptional degree of finesse. Unlike other grinders, particularly those with bottom adjustments, this grinder offers unparalleled precision. Sometimes, the perfect cup of coffee requires a setting that falls between two clicks, a feat not achievable with less precise grinders.

Exploring the Intricacies of the Grinding Wheel

Let’s talk about the J-Ultra’s grindstone. It boasts a 48 mm diameter, specifically crafted for espresso. I’ll delve deeper into this shortly, but rest assured, it’s a fact.

When you’re on the hunt for a coffee grinder specifically designed for espresso, there are three key factors you should keep in mind:

  • Fine adjustment: the J-Ultra’s precision of 8 µm per click enables very fine adjustment, essential for espresso.
  • Grinding wheel size: Larger grinding wheels (47-48 mm) reduce grinding time. For example, with smaller grindstones (38-40 mm), it takes around 1 minute 30 to grind by hand. With 47-48 mm wheels, the grinding time for 16 g of coffee is around 40 seconds.
  • Grindstones designed for espresso: The quality of the grind depends on its regularity. A wide disparity in the size of the ground fragments adversely affects the taste of the coffee. Some grindstones are optimized for the fine, even grind essential for espresso. Other grinders can be versatile, offering a grind that’s regular enough for both pour-over and espresso, but without reaching the quality of dedicated grinders.

These elements play a pivotal role in crafting a top-notch espresso.

Meet the 1Zpresso J-Ultra: Your Perfect Partner for an Exquisite Espresso Experience

It was a tough call deciding whether to use my La Pavoni or my Lelit Mara X to demonstrate an espresso made with the 1Zpresso J-Ultra. In the end, I opted for my Lelit Mara X. It’s been a while since I’ve showcased it, plus it’s simpler to photograph the extraction process with it compared to my La Pavoni. To keep our focus on the grinder’s operation and handling, I won’t delve into the intricacies of espresso making this time around. Rest assured, I’ve explored these topics in depth in previous articles.

Today, I’m spicing things up a bit with my espresso preparation. Instead of sticking to my usual routine, I’ll be grinding 18g of coffee. Why, you ask? Well, I’m in the mood to tweak my standard water-to-coffee ratio for a slightly more concentrated brew. Let’s see how this goes!

With the help of my trusty scale, I carefully measure out 18g of coffee. To mitigate the static electricity that often arises during the grinding process, I add a smattering of water drops. This static electricity is often the culprit behind those pesky lumps and the annoying coffee retention in the grinder.

Next, I carefully move the coffee beans into the welcoming embrace of the grinder for their transformation. The grinder’s opening is generously wide, ensuring a spill-free transfer of the beans.

Next, I extend the crank and begin the process of grinding. To provide a clearer picture, when I need to grind 18g of coffee using this grinder, I typically use the following setting: a complete rotation of the knob, followed by setting it to position 1.0. The entire grinding process for this amount of coffee usually takes me around 40 to 50 seconds.

Exploring the Retention Capacity of the 1Zpresso J-Ultra

In order to assess the retention capacity of this coffee grinder, I embarked on a simple experiment. I started by weighing the coffee beans before grinding them. After grinding, I weighed the coffee once more, this time in the filter holder. The results were quite revealing, as depicted in the accompanying photos. This grinder’s retention is remarkably minimal, which is a great feature.

Based on my personal experience, I’ve discovered that retention primarily happens in two key areas of a hand mill:

  1. At the grinding wheel outlet: This retention can easily be reduced using the RDT(Ross Droplet Technique).
  2. In the container, because of its shape or the materials used. I’ve used top-of-the-range grinders where the manufacturer had put a rim inside the container. This rim, designed to hold the container’s fastening system, blocked coffee every time it was poured into the filter.

Rest easy with the 1Zpresso J-Ultra. The thoughtful design features a gentle slope instead of a rim, ensuring no coffee gets trapped. Plus, the paint utilized is of the finest quality, guaranteeing zero retention.

It’s important to note that the use of the RTD technique significantly decreases retention. Additionally, you might observe a higher retention during the initial use. This is because the mill may be charged with static electricity, a result of the plastics used during its transportation and manufacturing process.

Once your coffee is finely ground and neatly poured into the filter holder, it’s time to take steps to prevent channeling. To do this, I recommend using a WDT to evenly distribute the coffee. Next, you’ll want to tamp it down firmly using a guide tamper. Lastly, don’t forget to add a puckscreen for the best results.

My trusty Lelit has been warming up for a bit, ensuring my cups are perfectly hot, and my filter holder is primed and ready. Now, it’s time to pour that delightful cup of coffee.

I’m thrilled to share that my coffee extraction process took a mere 25 seconds, operating at a pressure of 9 bar. Thanks to the flow control feature of my trusty Lelit Mara X, I was able to achieve a delightful 40 ml of coffee in my cup. Now, let’s take a visual journey through the different stages of the extraction process with the images provided below.

So, without further ado, let’s unveil the final result:

The image captured beautifully showcases the delightful coffee I brewed using the 1Zpresso J-Ultra coffee grinder and my trusty Lelit Mara X V2. To give you a vivid idea of my sensory experience, I’ve included a flavor wheel below. It visually represents the unique mouthfeel I experienced while savoring this particular brew.

  • Type of coffee: Arabica – Typica / Pacas
  • Altitude: 1200 – 1700m
  • SCA score: 84/100
  • Roaster’s description: A complex, highly aromatic coffee with bright, lively acidity and a smooth, velvety body.

Is it Possible to Brew a V60 Using a 1Zpresso J-Ultra?

Absolutely, you can certainly use a coffee grinder that’s primarily designed for espresso to prepare your V60. However, as highlighted in the grindstones section of this article, certain grindstones are specifically engineered to work more efficiently with particular grind sizes. Consequently, some grindstones might outperform the 1Zpresso J-Ultra when it comes to pour-over / V60. I experimented with the same coffee I typically use for espresso, but this time in a V60. Although the roast was slightly on the darker side for a V60, which usually favors very light roasts, the coffee turned out to be truly delightful.

Unraveling the Steps to Disassemble Your 1Zpresso J-Ultra

When it comes to disassembling your 1Zpresso J-Ultra, the process is quite straightforward. Start by gently unscrewing the nut that secures the central axle. You can easily do this with your fingers. Once that’s done, proceed to remove the grinding wheel. Now, with the help of the brush and pump that came with your grinder, you’re all set to clean it thoroughly. It’s as simple as that!

Here’s a snapshot showcasing the state of the grindstones after brewing several cups of coffee without giving them a proper clean.

Did you know? You can even remove the fixed grinding wheel to clean your mill more meticulously. It’s all about keeping things sparkling clean!

Final Thoughts: Does the 1Zpresso J-Ultra Reign Supreme as the Best Espresso Grinder?

Meet the J-Ultra, a premium coffee grinder that stands out for its exceptional build quality and the superior cup results it delivers. To be honest, it’s hard to find any shortcomings with this grinder. It boasts a plethora of benefits such as a stylish design, an excellent grip, and highly precise adjustment options with numerous notches. Plus, if needed, you have the option to dismantle and align the grinding wheels – a feature that’s quite rare. To top it all off, it comes complete with a carrying case and additional accessories.

When compared to the other coffee grinders featured on our site, such as the Kingrinder, El Comandante C40, Timemore S3, and the Apollo from BPlus, the 1Zpresso J-Ultra stands out as the top choice for espresso. While the quality of the brew is comparable to that of the Apollo or VS3 (which also have specific espresso grinders), the J-Ultra’s handling is far superior. The El Comandante

Wrapping things up, if your budget is flexible and your focus is primarily on espresso extraction, then the 1Zpresso J-Ultra is the perfect match for you. However, if you’re working with a tighter budget and also have a penchant for pour-over coffee, the Kingrinder makes a great alternative.

After careful consideration, I’ve awarded the 1Zpresso J-Ultra a perfect score of 5 out of 5.

My trusty BPlus Apollo coffee grinder has been a steadfast companion since the early days of my coffee blogging journey at coffeegeek.co. I fondly recall penning an article where I compared it with the Kinu M47 Classic. You can find that post right here.

Having explored a vast array of coffee grinders, some of which I’ve had the pleasure of featuring in my previous articles, I’m excited to revisit and refresh my thoughts on the BPlus Apollo today.

Bplus: The Architect Behind the Majestic Apollo

Meet the Apollo coffee grinder, a brainchild of Arthur, the founder of the BPlus company. Hailing from Taiwan, Arthur is not just a businessman, but a coffee aficionado, roaster, and inventor. His company has been a breeding ground for several innovative projects, many of which are directly associated with La Pavoni machines – a brand he proudly represents in Asia.

During one of his journeys, he found inspiration in a column from a Roman temple, which sparked the idea for his mill. I remember the moment I saw the pictures on social media, I was instantly smitten with this mill. Consequently, when it became available, I didn’t hesitate to purchase it. I was eager to see how it would stack up against the Kinu M47 Classic, which I was fortunate to own at the time.

Little did I realize when I penned my comparative analysis of the Kinu M47 Classic and the BPlus Apollo, it would create quite a buzz online. It seems that Kinu has a dedicated group of enthusiasts who were quick to assert that BPlus had simply replicated the Kinu M47. However, this was far from the truth. My article, through its detailed comparison of the two grinders, inadvertently debunked this myth.

Discover the Distinctive Elegance of the Apollo Coffee Grinder

Unlike our competitors such as Timemore, 1Zpresso, Kingrinder and others, who manufacture grinders composed of multiple components that assemble together, the Apollo grinder is uniquely crafted from the ground up using a CNC machine. This results in a product that, when held, feels impressively heavy and robust. I’ve been a proud owner of the Apollo coffee grinder for several years now and its charm never ceases to amaze me.

I personally own the black version of this model. However, you’ll be delighted to know that there are several other vibrant colors available to choose from.

However, let’s return to the distinctive features that set this mill apart for me. Interestingly, when it’s not in use, it serves as a charming piece of decor.

Exploring the Crank Handle

This grinder’s crank doesn’t retract, but it does feature a large, metallic knob that provides an excellent grip. I want to emphasize this aspect as I’ve had the opportunity to test MHW‘s 3Bomber, Kinu, and the Timemore S3 coffee grinders, all of which have significantly smaller crank handles. From my personal experience, I find that a larger handle offers a more comfortable grip.

The elegant “La Pavoni” laser engraving beautifully signifies the enduring connection between BPlus and La Pavoni.

Exploring the Adjustment Wheel

Discover the magic of the adjustment knob nestled at the apex of the mill, where the crank cozily connects to the axle. This axle is the life force that sets the grinding wheels in motion. The knob is your key to precision, enabling you to fine-tune the grind to your exact preference. Rest assured, you’ll never find yourself stuck between two clicks, searching for that elusive perfect setting.

Indeed, it’s interesting to note that most high-end coffee grinders, barring a few exceptions like the Timemore S3, provide an adequate level of fine-tuning for perfect espresso extraction. Factors like the design of the grinding wheels also play a significant role in determining the quality of the grind.

Conversely, grinders that feature a lower setting provide less precision in their adjustments, resulting in a broader gap between the grinding wheels with each click. To illustrate, during my evaluation of the El Commandante C40, I found its performance for espresso extraction somewhat lacking. Interestingly, I often found the perfect setting to be somewhere in between each click.

In essence, if you’re looking for a slow, coarse-grind extraction, you’ll find bottom-adjusting grinders to be your best bet. On the other hand, if you’re aiming for an espresso-type extraction, then top-adjusting grinders would be the ideal choice for you.

Unveiling the Charm of Cork

Unlike the majority of coffee grinders available today, which typically feature a removable handle that’s part of the cap, the Apollo grinder stands out with its non-detachable handle. It also comes with a silicone cap that needs to be fitted prior to use.

While it’s entirely possible to use the grinder without the cap, you might find that tiny fragments of coffee beans could scatter. For me, I tend to lean towards using the stopper provided by BPlus, despite the fact that it doesn’t quite match the aesthetic of the coffee grinder.

Exploring the Structure of the Apollo Coffee Grinder

As previously highlighted in the introduction of this article, the design of the mill draws significant inspiration from a column found in a Roman temple. In essence, the mill beautifully encapsulates the spirit of Italy, the birthplace of espresso and coffee.

I’m not entirely sure about the exact cost involved in manufacturing each of these mills, but I do know that the process is quite time-consuming, especially since each piece is meticulously carved from the ground by a CNC machine. I had a conversation with Arthur a while back and got some insight into this. Surprisingly, he sells the Apollo virtually at its production cost. This implies that his motivation to keep producing this coffee grinder is driven more by his passion than by the prospect of profit. This could explain why his coffee grinders are frequently out of stock.

Let’s circle back to our main discussion. The unique design of the grinder, which tapers to a narrower top and expands into a funnel at the bottom, offers two significant benefits. The funnel design not only facilitates the pouring of coffee into the grinder but also ensures that the ground coffee doesn’t spill out during use.

Exploring the Apollo Grinding Wheel

The grinding wheel of the Apollo is a product of the renowned Italian manufacturer, Itamil. This is the very same grinding wheel that you’ll find in the Kinu and certain 1Zpresso machines, and possibly in other mill brands as well. This grindstone is known for delivering exceptional results when it comes to espresso extractions. With a diameter of 47 mm, it’s crafted from an incredibly durable alloy, ensuring its longevity. I’ve been using this grinder since mid-2018 and have processed kilograms of coffee without noticing any signs of wear. Plus, the grinder’s design allows for easy disassembly, making it a breeze to replace the grinding wheels if the need arises.

Meet the Recipient

The container is meticulously crafted from a solid block, giving it a substantial weight. Its low center of gravity and broad base ensure that the mill maintains stability on your workspace.

The interior of the container is perfectly smooth, devoid of any rims that could potentially trap coffee grounds, a feature I’ve noticed in other coffee grinders. The container’s 58 mm width is a direct match for most filters, adhering to the standard professional format. It’s also designed to screw onto the base. The threading is much more refined than what you’d find on the Kingrinder, for instance. Initially, I was concerned about damaging the thread. However, having owned and frequently used this mill since 2018, I can confidently say it’s held up beautifully without any issues.

A layer of rubber is thoughtfully placed beneath the container to ensure your worktop remains unscathed.

Mastering Espresso Extraction with the Apollo from BPlus and La Pavoni

Mastering the art of brewing espresso with a La Pavoni has been thoroughly discussed in our previous article. As such, we’ll bypass some steps in this guide to focus primarily on the intricacies of the coffee grinder.

https://www.coffeegeek.fr/en/la-pavoni-coffee-machine-tutorial/
Tutorial article explaining the general basics of making a successful espresso with a La Pavoni coffee machine.

Let’s embark on the journey of making the perfect cup of coffee! The initial step involves measuring the coffee accurately. Once done, you’ll need to sprinkle a few droplets of water onto the beans before you grind them. This method is known as the RDT technique. It’s a clever trick that reduces static electricity, a key contributor to retention, ensuring you get the most out of your coffee beans.

Effortlessly, I pour the coffee beans into the grinder. The funnel, a cleverly designed feature of the grinder, ensures that every single bean is guided in smoothly, with none straying off course.

Remember to pop on the silicone stopper. While it’s not a must, it’s a handy little addition that helps to keep those coffee beans in check during the grinding process.

Next, I proceed to grind the coffee. Among the numerous coffee grinders I’ve experimented with, this one stands out as one of the quickest in grinding an equivalent quantity of coffee. This rapidity produces a noticeable torque during the grinding process. BPlus has thoughtfully provided rubber straps that can be wrapped around the grinder for enhanced grip. These bands certainly make the grinder more manageable, but they do somewhat disrupt the aesthetic appeal of Apollo’s design.

In just a matter of moments, I’ve completed the task of grinding my coffee. I then carefully pour it into the filter holder of my trusty La Pavoni. To distribute the coffee evenly, I use my handy WDT. This is a crucial step in the espresso-making process as it helps to prevent the occurrence of channeling.

Understanding Coffee Retention in the Apollo Grinder

Now that we’ve enjoyed our coffee and I’ve successfully set up the puckscreen, it’s the perfect time to delve into the Apollo‘s retention capabilities. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find out that it’s remarkably low.

Let’s begin with the container. Once you’ve poured the coffee into the filter pan, you’ll notice that there’s not a trace of coffee left behind, except for a fine dusting of powder. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the grinding wheel outlets. Interestingly, they don’t seem to retain a noteworthy amount of coffee.

The minimal retention feature of the Apollo coffee grinder is truly impressive. It’s worth noting that many hand grinders boast low coffee retention, especially at the grindstone outlet. However, the real difference often lies in the design of the container. Certain brands have chosen components or shapes that inadvertently lead to coffee retention. A prime example of this is Kinu. When I had one of their grinders (though this may have changed since), it featured a rim on the inside of the container which inevitably resulted in some coffee retention.

Crafting My Espresso with the BPlus Apollo Grinder

Allow me to present the exquisite espresso I’ve crafted. The coffee was finely ground using the Apollo, and then meticulously extracted with my trusty La Pavoni.

Guidelines on Disassembling Your Apollo Mill

Unlike many manual coffee grinders available out there, the Apollo stands out with its design that prioritizes easy disassembly and cleaning. So, let’s embark on a journey to disassemble this grinder together, shall we?

Let’s get started! First off, it’s a good idea to take note of your mill’s current settings. Once you’ve done that, go ahead and unscrew the bolt that’s securing the crank in place, then carefully remove it.

Next, gently take off the metal adjustment component.

Let’s get started on how to unscrew the nut that holds the setting digits. First, gently take off the container. Now, using your fingers, secure the grinding wheel in place. Once that’s done, you can go ahead and remove the nut. Easy, right?

Let’s carefully take off the grinding wheel and the central axle.

Let’s delve into all the parts you can disassemble on the Apollo without the need for any tools. Isn’t that convenient?

Let’s get started on how to dismantle the fixed section of your grinding wheel. It’s a simple process, really. All you need to do is unscrew a pair of screws. And guess what? You’ll only need an Allen key to do this. Easy, right?

After carefully removing the stationary component of the grinding wheel, we now have effortless access to the mill’s interior. This allows us to clean it thoroughly and efficiently.

Let’s take a closer look at the Apollo spacecraft, meticulously deconstructed for your viewing pleasure.

Wrapping It Up

In conclusion, amidst the influx of coffee grinders flooding the market, one might wonder, does the Apollo still hold its ground? From my perspective, it absolutely does. The Apollo grinder has not only undergone several transformations since I first acquired it, but it’s also the creation of a dedicated artisan who prioritizes excellence over mass production. Granted, there are areas where the Apollo could use some enhancements, like the stopper, which unlike its rivals, isn’t attached to the crank. However, when it’s not grinding away, the Apollo’s stylish design makes it a true conversation starter.

As of this moment, I’ve had the pleasure of owning approximately ten unique manual coffee grinders. However, I’ve parted ways with all of them, save for one – the remarkable Apollo.

Given that this is a trial piece, I find it fitting to award it a commendable score of 4.5 out of 5.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

In the vibrant and ever-evolving universe of coffee, one petite gadget has been stirring up quite a buzz on my Discord server: the Picopresso from Wacaco. This compact and clever contraption pledges to revolutionize how we savor our espresso while on the go.

Exploring the Design and Construction of the Picopresso

Unveiling the Package

It’s quite rare for me to highlight the packaging of the products I review on the blog, as I typically regard this element as less significant. Although there’s a certain charm in unwrapping a meticulously packaged product, I view it as a minor detail in the grand scheme of things.

Yet, in this particular instance, I can’t help but emphasize its exceptional quality. Upon unboxing, I found myself thinking, “They must have allocated a significant portion of the item’s budget just for this beautifully designed cardboard box”. This level of meticulous attention to detail and the evident aspiration to enhance the product’s value from the get-go is truly commendable.

What’s Inside the Box?

The Picopresso is thoughtfully packaged with a variety of accessories. Ingeniously, these accessories can be stored right inside the machine itself, enhancing its portability and making it delightfully easy to use.

Let’s take a peek at what’s inside the box:

  • A Picopresso and instructions for use
  • A cleaning brush
  • A grind distributor for even coffee distribution
  • A measuring spoon
  • A protective carrying case
  • A funnel for easy filling
  • Filter and hand shower for optimum extraction
  • A tamper to pack the coffee

Exploring the Design and Handling of Picopresso

Boiling it down to a nutshell, the Picopresso stands out as a marvel of exceptional design and craftsmanship.

While it’s true that the body is crafted from plastic, it’s a high-quality material that you can feel the moment you touch it. The device exudes a sense of sturdiness when you hold it. Even when the piston is fully extended, there’s no wobble, giving you a reassuring sense of its durability and resilience. The hand shower and filter, which can be effortlessly detached for a comprehensive clean, are secured by an aluminum ring. This adds a delightful touch to the experience of handling these components.

Allow me to highlight the travel cover that comes with the Picopresso. This sturdy cover is not only visually appealing but also provides superior protection for your appliance, courtesy of its plush velvet interior. The robust zipper further enhances this sense of durability, guaranteeing top-notch protection while you’re on the move with your Picopresso.

Every accessory that comes with the Picopresso is of exceptional quality. This includes the tamper and funnel, which are ingeniously designed to fit snugly inside the unit. This smart design not only optimizes space but also enhances the portability of the device.

While the provided splitter does its job, it might not be the best choice for those who use it frequently. If you’re one of them, consider spending a little more on a portable WDT. The WDT, or Weiss Distribution Technique tool, ensures an even distribution of your coffee before tamping. This helps to avoid channeling during extraction, especially when you’re on the go.

Mastering the Use of Your Picopresso: A Simple Guide

Once you’ve unboxed your Picopresso, the first step is to heat some water using your kettle. Next, measure out 16g of your favorite coffee and grind it. If you’re unsure about which grinder to use, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered with a detailed section here. Here’s a handy tip for you: use the hot water to warm up your cup and the Picopresso before you start brewing. This will ensure your coffee stays hot for longer.

Here’s a handy tip for all you travelers out there: always keep a Thermos filled with hot water close by. It’s a lifesaver!

First, I carefully position the funnel over the filter. Next, I pour in the freshly ground coffee. To ensure an even distribution, I gently smooth it out using a WDT tool. This crucial step aids in preventing channeling during the extraction process, ensuring a perfect brew every time.

Next, we move on to the tamping stage. With the help of a tamper, I apply a steady pressure of 12 to 13 Kg. It’s crucial to maintain a straight angle during this process. As highlighted in this insightful article, an uneven tamp can result in a thinner section of the coffee puck, which can inadvertently guide the water to flow through this path preferentially.

For me, adding a puck-screen to the coffee cake is a game-changer. While this step isn’t mandatory, it does come with some noteworthy benefits. For instance, it ensures a uniform water distribution over the cake and helps keep the spray head spotless.

First, I carefully discard the water that was used to preheat both the Picopresso and the cup. Next, I attach the filter to the Picopresso, making sure to position the spray head over it in advance. After that, I pour hot water into the Picopresso. Remember, it’s crucial to avoid using boiling water, as it can scorch the coffee and spoil its delightful taste.

Don’t hesitate to experiment by preparing your coffee at different temperatures, as this has a significant influence on its aroma. Here are a few tips to guide you:

  • Fairly hot, ideal for dark roasts.
  • Warm, dedicated to medium roasts.
  • Very hot, for light roasts.

Gently, I position the lid atop the Picopresso reservoir, ensuring it’s not sealed too tightly. This is to prevent a vacuum from forming during the pumping process. With everything set, I begin to pump. In just a few moments, the delightful aroma of coffee fills the air as it starts to flow.

Voila! Quite impressive, don’t you think? As you can clearly observe, the outcome is truly remarkable. This compact travel coffee machine delivers a genuine, rich espresso.

Here’s a friendly suggestion: Consider using a coffee grinder

Wacaco, the manufacturer, confirms in their product guide that the Picopresso is compatible with pre-ground coffee. However, as a true espresso enthusiast, I beg to differ. It’s not just preferable, but absolutely crucial to use a coffee grinder to grind freshly roasted beans right before brewing. This practice helps to prevent the coffee grounds from oxidizing when exposed to air, thereby maintaining the full spectrum of their delightful flavors.

When it comes to using supermarket ground coffee, we recommend steering clear of a bottomless filter holder. It’s a better idea to use the provided pouring spout. Why, you ask? Well, with pre-ground coffee, there’s a higher chance of channeling, and we certainly don’t want that, do we?

Choosing the Perfect Coffee Grinder for Your Picopresso

Wacaco has recently introduced a manual, portable coffee grinder to the market. While it’s a decent option, it may not be the ideal choice for espresso preparation. For a more precise grind, I’d suggest considering a top-adjustable coffee grinder. These grinders allow for finer adjustments to the spacing of the grinding wheels with each notch, offering a superior grind compared to bottom-adjustable models. If you’re in the market for a new coffee grinder, the 1Zpresso brand is a fantastic choice. Models like the 1Zpresso X-ultra or K-ultra have consistently demonstrated their excellence in espresso preparation.

If you’re on the hunt for a reliable coffee grinder, the Kingrinder K4 or K6 could be just what you’re looking for. I’ve personally put these models to the test, and you can check out my detailed review here.

Explore Exciting Add-Ons for Your Picopresso

In a previous discussion, I recommended the addition of a handy WDT tool to enhance your coffee distribution process. Another aspect worth your attention is the filter replacement. While it’s true that Wacaco hasn’t included a high-quality IMS filter as standard with the Picopresso, don’t worry! You can easily get one due to its standard size, especially from platforms like Amazon. Choosing IMS filters over those from less popular brands guarantees a superior espresso extraction experience, notably by preventing channeling.

Wacaco also provides a nifty leatherette protective cover for the Picopresso. Based on the reviews I’ve come across, this little addition enhances the grip of the device while in use. While I haven’t had the chance to try out this accessory myself, it’s worth mentioning that it comes in a variety of appealing colors.

Wrapping It Up

In my quest for ever-greater knowledge, I discovered the monthly subscriptions available from roasters in France and other European countries. And I decided to give in to temptation…

As you may know, coffee is much more than just a beverage, and the bottomless pit that is specialty coffee may still scare you a little. For while specialty coffee is a sensory experience, awakening our taste buds and transporting us to a world of rich and varied flavors, it’s also a cost that not all of us are ready to assume when taking our first steps into this world.

As a barista for over 7 years, I first discovered coffee as a fine product through my studies in the hotel and catering industry, then as a gourmet pleasure during my various travels around the world. At the dawn of this new year, which promises to be full of enriching projects for me, I thought it would be interesting to learn more and more and discover a whole host of new coffees. That’s why I’m so curious about the roaster subscriptions. Receiving different, freshly roasted coffees every month – what a great idea! But is it really worth it? That’s the question I’d like to answer every month in 2024.

As we usher in the new year, I’m thrilled to introduce two renowned roasters for the month of January – KB Roasters and Kawa. Both are proudly based in the enchanting city of Paris, France.

Here at KB, I’ve made the delightful choice to opt for:

  • 2x250gr espresso: €30.00
  • 2x250gr filter: €30.00

At Kawa, I’ve made the delightful choice to receive:

  • 2x200gr espresso “micro-lot”: €29.90
  • 2x200gr “micro-lot” filter: €29.90

The “micro-lot 88+” option allows you to receive only exceptional coffees.

Welcome to KB Roasters!

Although KB Roasters chooses not to disclose the SCA (Q Grading) ratings for their coffee selection, this is where Kawa shines. They proudly display their coffees’ SCA ratings on their website, allowing you to make an informed choice.

I was genuinely impressed by the swift service provided by KB Roasters. I subscribed and received my order in less than three days, even during the busy festive season – that’s quite remarkable! The coffee bags I received were freshly roasted just a few days prior, so I had to patiently wait a few more days before indulging (as it’s widely known that coffee tastes best between 7 and 21 days post-roasting). The coffees I received were readily available on their online store at the time of delivery, and I was thrilled to save a tidy sum, albeit a small euro.

Here’s what the KB Roasters selection has in store for you:

  • Limao Rosa: natural espresso from Brazil
  • Aurora Anaerobic: anaerobic washed espresso from Nicaragua
  • Huancas Fidel: Peru’s natural filter
  • Chelichele Oro: anaerobic fermentation filter from Ethiopia

Within this selection of four coffees, we find a balanced mix of two traditional processes and two that are a bit more experimental. The geographical origins of these coffees aren’t particularly diverse, with three hailing from South and Central America, and one from Africa. However, a quick glance at the store and the roaster’s social media pages reveals an exciting array of coffees from Asian countries as well. This is a delightful bonus for me, as I’m always eager to explore and savor new flavors.

Imagine my astonishment when I found myself delighting in the Brazilian espresso, a pleasure I hadn’t anticipated. You see, I’ve often been skeptical about Brazilian coffees. As the world’s top producer, Brazil sends out a mix of both average and exceptional coffees. Unfortunately, amidst the sea of mediocrity, the true gems often elude me. However, KB Roasters has managed to present a wonderfully balanced, velvety coffee, graced with the flavors of milk chocolate, almonds, and a subtle hint of citrus.

The second espresso offers a delightful floral bouquet, complemented by a hint of acidity, yet devoid of any astringency. The two filter coffees, though distinct in their own ways, both carry a fruity essence and an exotic flair that I find particularly appealing in coffees brewed with gentle methods. A special mention goes to the Chelichele Oro, a filter coffee that strikes a perfect balance with zero acidity, a subtle touch of bitterness, and delightful notes of red fruit, berries, and cocoa. It’s a truly enjoyable experience.

Discover Micro Lots at Kawa

While Kawa ‘s delivery took a bit more time, I was pleasantly surprised to find that three out of the four coffees in my parcel had been freshly roasted after I placed my order. This certainly explains the extra time taken in preparation. Interestingly, none of the coffee varieties I received are currently listed in their online store, or at least not with the same roast. This makes it challenging to determine the value of the subscription. However, I’m keen to keep an eye on their offerings this month and the next, to see if the coffees I’ve received become available online.

Having been a regular customer of Kawa, both in-store and online, I was quite familiar with their offerings. Kawa is well-known for its unique and unconventional coffee varieties, often involving intriguing processes like the strawberry honey method. So, the contents of my package were not entirely unexpected, but still exciting nonetheless.

January brought us a delightful surprise in the form of two unique coffees from the farm of Nestor Lasso. Nestor is a young Colombian producer who, in collaboration with his brother, has gained international recognition for his innovative and experimental techniques. He’s a bit of an enigma in the coffee world, a true trailblazer. Additionally, we were thrilled to feature a coffee from Jhoan Vergara, whose Las Flores farm is closely associated with Nestor Lasso’s operations.

We’re excited to share with you our top selections for Kawa this January:

  • Jhoan Vergara: anaerobic washed espresso from Colombia
  • Nestor Lasso (Chiroso): anaerobic washed espresso from Colombia
  • Finca Hartmann: Panama’s natural filter
  • Nestor Lasso (Typica ): anaerobic washed filter from Colombia

We have an intriguing selection of coffee exclusively from Central and South America. It’s worth noting that Colombia and Panama, being neighboring countries, produce similar varieties of coffee, with only a few unique exceptions to each.

Jhoan Vergara’s farm produces a truly delightful coffee, a rich, syrupy Java that teases the palate with hints of exotic and yellow fruits. With its low acidity and natural sweetness, this coffee is a perfect choice for a creamy latte. Nestor Lasso’s two coffee varieties are a delightful surprise. From the refreshing, citrusy Chiroso to the sweet, candy-like Typica, there’s a world of flavors to explore. This has been a fascinating journey, and if you’re eager to uncover new tastes through speciality coffees, I wholeheartedly recommend trying El Diviso’s offerings.

The last coffee I had the pleasure of tasting truly stood out – the renowned Finca Hartmann from Panama. It presented a robust, full-bodied filter, intriguingly tinged with a hint of almond-like bitterness. The subtle brewing methods beautifully amplified the notes of red fruit and brown sugar, making it my absolute favorite.

Coffee roasting

As we wrap up this invigorating month of January, we’re excited to introduce you to two distinct roasters. Despite their contrasting values and methodologies, both bring a unique and captivating charm to the table. So, let’s dive in and explore what makes each of them so intriguing!

Having given it some thought, I’ve decided to stick with just the KB espresso and Kawa filter subscriptions for the upcoming month of February. This will allow me to use the leftover budget to explore offerings from a different roaster, ideally within the same price range. If you have any suggestions or a particular roaster that has piqued your interest, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

All About Espresso

Rating: 0.5 out of 5.

The outcomes I experienced with my espressos made using the S3 were truly remarkable. It appears that Timemore may have slightly miscalibrated the grinder spacing on the “zero” setting, which unfortunately makes it challenging to achieve a fine enough grind for espresso. Even when adjusted to the finest setting, my coffee, which was roasted just 12 days ago, tends to flow a bit too rapidly under a pressure that doesn’t exceed 4 bar, as demonstrated in the video below. This could be due to one of two potential reasons:

  • Either the Timemore S3 is designed so that the grinding wheels, even at the zero setting, are spaced apart to prevent damage, but in this case, the spacing is excessive. I usually use 16 g of coffee for my espressos, and with other grinders such as the Timemore Chestnut X, Kingrinder K6, 1Zpresso J Ultra, C40 and others, I haven’t encountered any problems. For example, with the Kingrinder K6, I set the position to 35 for 16g of coffee. On the other hand, with the S3, even at the finest setting, the grind remains too coarse, leaving the only solution to increase the quantity of coffee to obtain an espresso. Even so, the adjustment margin remains too small. The S3 doesn’t seem ideal for espresso.
  • Either the mill is defective. But from the exchanges I’ve had with Timemore on this subject, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

At first, I toyed with the idea of swapping my trusty Kingrinder K6 for the sleek Timemore Chestnut S3. However, after much thought, I’ve decided to stick with my current grinder.

This was a result I had not expected. I contacted Timemore for clarification and to determine whether or not there was a defect in my mill. Here’s a summary of our exchange:(click here to scroll down).

Hello Timemore,

Hope you’re doing great! I’m reaching out to you after my latest acquisition – the Timemore S3 coffee grinder. I bought this with the aim of replacing my Kingrinder K6 and sharing my thoughts about it on my coffee-centric website.

I’m just putting the finishing touches on the article that’s due to be published soon, and I thought I’d share some preliminary insights with you. The Timemore S3, boasting a larger burr size and an innovative top adjustment feature, initially appeared to be quite promising. However, I’m sorry to report that it falls short when it comes to preparing espresso. The grinder’s zero setting results in an overly large gap between the burrs, which unfortunately compromises the quality of the grind.

At first, I had a hunch that the grinder I got could be faulty. But after running a series of tests, it seems the problem is actually rooted in the product’s design. This revelation is quite surprising and letdown, especially when I reflect on the high expectations I had initially.

Here’s some good news! The grinder works wonderfully with other brewing methods. I gave it a whirl with the V60 this morning and it didn’t disappoint. Plus, its user-friendly design and effortless operation deserve a round of applause.

However, I’ve noticed a slight hiccup with the grinder’s handle. It seems to have a bit of trouble retracting as it should, which makes me wonder about the thoroughness of the quality control process. Could you kindly shed some light on whether this is a one-off defect or a feature that’s common to this model?

Moreover, I’m eager to find out whether the grinder was intentionally crafted with these unique features, or if it diverges from the standard specifications we usually anticipate.

Should you wish to delve deeper into this topic, I’m more than happy to continue our discussion. I truly appreciate your time and consideration regarding this matter. Thank you!

I eagerly await your response. In the meantime, please accept my warmest regards from Timemore.

Warm Regards,

Hello Lucia,

At the moment, I’m putting the finishing touches on an in-depth piece about the Timemore Chestnut S3.

However, I’ve run into a bit of a snag. Despite adjusting the grinder to the finest setting, I’m finding it challenging to achieve a grind that’s just right for espresso preparation. This has got me wondering: is this a unique issue with the unit I have, or is it a trait shared by all grinders of this model?

Your feedback is incredibly important to me. It’s not just going to shape the content of my article, but it will also guide the advice I give to my readers. My goal is to deliver precise and trustworthy information, and gaining a deeper understanding of this topic will empower me to do just that.

Hello Lucia, I’ve put together a video to give you a more comprehensive understanding of the issue at hand. The key segment to focus on starts between the 8th and 9th minute, specifically during the coffee extraction process. Feel free to watch the video at your convenience by clicking on the following link: Timemore Chestnut S3 espresso test (youtube.com). I hope this helps!

There seems to be a bit of a hiccup with the coffee grinder. When it’s set to 0, the lowest setting on both the top and bottom dials, it’s unable to make coffee. This issue appears to impact the quality and consistency of the coffee it produces. As a frequent user of your product, this is a bit worrisome for me.

I’m excited to share with you that I’m currently crafting an article on this very topic. The plan is to have it ready for publication by the middle of the week. However, before I put the finishing touches on my piece, I’d love to incorporate your insights or comments. This will help me ensure that the information I present is both accurate and balanced. Specifically, I’m curious to know if this issue is a common occurrence across all your grinders, or if it’s just an isolated incident.

I would truly appreciate your swift response. This will significantly aid me in providing the most honest and precise evaluation for my readers. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

I appreciate your time and consideration in reading this message. Eagerly awaiting your response.

Warm Regards,

Hello Thomas,

We truly appreciate your patience. Thank you!

I’ve just attentively viewed the video you shared, and I can confirm that adjusting the grind size to 0 is perfectly acceptable.

For an optimal coffee experience, we suggest tweaking the weight of your coffee beans to between 18-20 grams. Give it a try and see the delightful difference it makes!

Should you have any queries or require further information, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! We’re here to help.

We truly appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Wishing you a delightful day!

Mail text 7

Hello and a very good morning to you!

I experimented with both 18g and 20g settings before deciding to return the coffee grinder to the seller. Regardless of the setting, I found it impossible to brew a decent espresso.
Regrettably, the issue seems to lie in the mill gap, which is too wide. This makes it impossible to achieve the perfect espresso grind.

I’m delighted to incorporate your insightful response into my article. Thank you for your valuable contribution!

Hello there! I hope you’re having a fantastic day.

Mail text 8

Hello Thomas,

Warm greetings to you this fine morning!

We would greatly appreciate it if you could share your video with us, showcasing the entire process of grinding 18g or 20g (similar to the one you previously sent us).

Let’s ensure we’ve got this right.

We truly appreciate your understanding on this matter.

Mail text 9

Hello there,
Just to clarify, I’m not an employee but a fellow customer who purchased the same grinder. Unfortunately, I encountered an issue with the grinder as it arrived with a defective crank. Although I didn’t mention this in my initial review, I do have video evidence to support my claim.
I’ve also penned an article on my blog discussing the reasons why this grinder might not be suitable for espresso. However, I’ve noticed that my queries have yet to be addressed. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

I just wanted to remind you that I’ve already returned the item to the seller I originally bought it from. Despite my best efforts, I wasn’t able to capture all my coffee-making adventures with it. And believe me, I’ve tried – but neither 18g nor 20g seems to be the magic number for brewing that perfect espresso. It simply didn’t work out.

Great! I’ll be incorporating your insightful responses directly into my article, maintaining their original essence.

Next, I’ll be taking the time to translate my article into English for my other coffee-themed blogs.

Mail text 10

Hello Thomas,

I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that may have been caused.

We truly value your feedback. In fact, just this afternoon, we carried out a series of tests inspired by the scenarios you brought to our attention.

The S3 is primarily engineered for pour-over coffee, yet it also boasts compatibility with espresso preparation. It’s a versatile choice for your brewing needs.

I understand that you’re experiencing an issue with your grinder’s handle, specifically, it’s not retracting as it should. Let’s work together to resolve this problem.

It’s a bit tricky to fully grasp the situation from your video. If you have any additional videos that could shed more light on the matter, we’d be more than happy to take a look at them.

We genuinely look forward to addressing each and every concern you’ve brought to our attention.

We truly appreciate your support!

Mail text 11

Hello there,

If you’re curious about the issue I encountered with the crank, you can get a glimpse of it in this private, unlisted video (https://youtu.be/fCcNRx0b5iY?si=JraLJZeJL0s3NZv1). However, I didn’t mention this problem in the written review of the Timemore Chestnut S3 (Test du Timemore Chestnut S3, un résultat surprenant – CoffeeGeek) because I managed to resolve it independently.

Indeed, your coffee grinder is primarily designed for coffee beans. I’ll make sure to adjust my article to emphasize this point more clearly.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you consider developing a version of the S3 specifically designed for espresso. With all the fantastic elements you already have, you’re perfectly positioned to become the market leader.

Wishing you a wonderful day!

In summarizing my email conversations with Timemore, they’ve clarified that the S3 was primarily designed with pour-over coffee in mind. However, they also mentioned that it’s entirely feasible to use it for making espresso, provided you use a sufficient amount of coffee. From my personal experience and trials with espresso, it appears that around 10g of coffee is needed for the grinder to function optimally. To wrap up, it’s my belief that the S3’s grinder excels at coarser grinds, perfect for pour-over, but may fall a bit short when it comes to finer grinds needed for espresso. Additionally, I’ve noticed that the grinders are quite spaced out even at position 0, which could potentially result in under-extraction when brewing espresso.

Embracing Gentle Techniques

Rating: 5 out of 5.

When it comes to milder brewing methods like the V60 or Chemex, the perfect grind size is somewhere between medium and medium-fine. This ensures a balanced extraction, preventing both under-extraction (which happens when the infusion process is too quick) and over-extraction (when the infusion takes too long). It’s also vital to have a uniform grind size to prevent the filter from getting clogged with ultra-fine particles, ensuring a consistent extraction of all those delicious aromas and flavors. For a deeper dive into this topic, feel free to check out my article on troubleshooting filtered coffee infusions.

Experience the perfect blend with the Timemore S3. Its precision and uniform grind make it the ideal choice for brewing mild coffee. Get ready to elevate your coffee preparation to new heights with this exceptional tool.

Wrapping Things Up

When I decided to swap my KINGrinder K6 for this new espresso grinder, I quickly discovered that it wasn’t quite up to the task. It’s possible that my S3 model was defective (I’ll update this review if that turns out to be the case), but as it stands, I can’t recommend this grinder for espresso brewing. Instead, I’d suggest considering models like the KINGrinder or 1Zpresso. However, for slower extraction methods such as the V60, AeroPress or French press, this grinder performs admirably, particularly due to its

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Timemore presents the Chestnut S3, a grinder that beautifully marries aesthetics and ergonomics. Its excellent grip, tool-free disassembly, and stunning design make it a joy to use. However, it’s worth noting that it may not be the best choice for espresso lovers, as the gap between the grinding wheels is a bit too wide in the zero position. But fear not, if you’re a fan of gentler extraction methods like the V60, this grinder is perfectly suited for you and promises to deliver a superb cup of coffee.

The Bright Side

  • Overall mill design
  • Very good grip
  • Cleverly designed retractable crank
  • Pleasant to use
  • Easily dismantled
  • Grinding wheel for overlay
  • Suitable for gentle methods
  • Price

Areas for Improvement

  • Not suitable for espresso
  • The mill’s “zero” means the grinding wheels are too far apart

Boasting standout features such as the E61 group, dual pressure gauges, and a whisper-quiet vibrating pump, this Lelit model already makes a strong impression on paper. But let’s not stop there. Let’s dive in further to uncover the additional treasures this Lelit machine holds for us.

Experience the Silence with Our Quiet Vibratory Pump

Despite being equipped with a vibrating pump, the Lelit Mara X is impressively quiet. Sure, it’s a smidge louder than a rotary pump, but it’s substantially less noisy than any other vibrating pump I’ve come across. If you’re intrigued, I encourage you to watch this enlightening video that compares the noise levels of the Lelit PL92T and the Lelit Mara X.

Exploring the Steam Nozzle and Hot Water Tap

Unlike some machines, such as the Bezzera Unica, the PL62X distinguishes itself with a unique feature – a separate steam nozzle and hot water tap. This thoughtful design offers significant advantages. To illustrate, let’s consider the Bezzera Unica. I remember a time when my father, trying to use the integrated hot water tap in the steam nozzle, unintentionally created a water jet so forceful that it splashed out all the coffee he was attempting to dilute. Fortunately, the clever design of the PL62X safeguards against such incidents, ensuring a more controlled and user-friendly experience.

Our machine’s steam nozzle is a marvel of versatility and power. Thoughtfully insulated everywhere except the tip, it guarantees your safety by preventing burns and keeps things tidy by ensuring milk doesn’t stick to the surface. It’s all about enhancing your experience with a touch of safety and cleanliness!

Similar to the faucet, the tap also boasts a multi-directional and insulated design. This ensures that you can operate it with ease and confidence, without the fear of scalding yourself.

Exploring the Temperature and Steam Mode Buttons

Upon removing the water drip tray, you’ll discover a versatile three-position switch located on the front of the machine. This convenient feature provides you with the flexibility to select from three distinct temperature settings, tailoring your experience to your preference.

  • Position 0: fairly hot (88 to 91°C), ideal for dark roasts.
  • Position I: hot (91 to 94°C), for medium roasts.
  • Position II: very hot (93 to 97°C), for light roasts.

Whenever I set my Mara X into action, it usually requires around 15 minutes to heat up and reach the ideal temperature.

Once you’ve gently taken out the water drip tray, you’ll find a surprise waiting for you! There’s another button nestled on the right-hand side of the machine, just ready for you to explore.

There are two delightful ways you can utilize this button:

  • Xmode Steam (I on the button) increases steam power after making a coffee.
  • Xmode Coffee (0 on the button) does not change the steam power after making a coffee. It promotes regularity in coffee brewing, especially when several coffees are made consecutively.

Delving into the world of steam power, you’ll find a distinct contrast between the two modes. Xmode Coffee holds its own when it comes to frothing milk, yet it’s evident that Xmode Steam outshines with its exceptional power. It operates as though it’s equipped with a boiler exclusively engineered for steam, positioning it as a top-tier choice.

After you’ve experienced the “Xmode Steam” feature, you’ll observe how promptly the machine’s heat exchanger returns to its initial temperature. This process becomes even speedier with a thorough flush!

Exploring the Water Tank

Lelit has ingeniously designed a water tank with two small handles, making it effortlessly easy to handle. To extend the lifespan of your machine and prevent issues such as limescale, we recommend using filter cartridges. In a thoughtful touch, Lelit has included graduations on the handles, enabling precise measurement of the filtered water, ensuring your machine remains in prime condition.

This impressive machine features a water tank that can comfortably hold up to 2.5 liters. If you’re just getting started with it, we recommend checking the water level in the tank. Remember, the machine’s boiler has a maximum capacity of 1.8 liters.

Exploring Sight Glasses and Pressure Gauges

The Lelit is thoughtfully designed with three convenient LED indicators for your ease of use:

Heating indicator for lelit mara X

Just a gentle reminder that your machine is in the process of warming up. It should reach the perfect temperature in about 15 minutes. Stay patient and excited!

Led for water supply to lelit mara x reservoir

Our thoughtful feature is designed to alert you when water is detected in the tank. Should the tank run dry, a flashing LED light will serve as a gentle reminder to refill. And, if you’re in the midst of brewing your favorite cup of coffee, there’s no need to fret. The machine is equipped with a small emergency reserve to guarantee that your brew is finished to perfection.

Indicateur d'allimentation de la lelit mara X

The PL62X comes with a cleverly designed LED light that surrounds the “on/off” button. This feature offers a clear and easy-to-understand visual indicator of whether the machine is powered on or off.

The lelit mara X features 3 leds

The dual pressure gauge is a handy tool that offers two essential pieces of data:

  • Steam : Indicates steam pressure.
  • Pump : Displays pump pressure. The pump is electronically equipped with an integrated pre-infusion function.

Comes with a Filter Holder and Tamper

Lelit has truly outdone themselves with their brilliantly engineered spouted filter holder. This masterfully crafted piece is designed to sit perfectly flat on your countertop, featuring a small, innovative wedge that ingeniously prevents the spouts from making direct contact with the surface. This clever feature not only keeps your countertop clean but also protects the spouts from potential damage. The filter holder’s dual spouts are conveniently positioned close together, offering flexibility for brewing into one or two cups. And the cherry on top? The filter holder comes complete with a full set of precision IMS filters, a brand that coffee aficionados around the globe trust and rely on.

Tamper supplied with machine.

The tamper, with a diameter of 58.55 mm, is very comfortable to hold. Its simplicity, with a red-painted wooden construction, makes it both effective and aesthetically pleasing. There’s no immediate cost to replace it.

For my part, I ended up opting for a tamper with a guide, the Normcore V4. I prefer a tamper with a guide because it allows uniform tamping and keeps channeling to a minimum.

Enhance Your PL62X Experience with Our Elegant Wooden Accessory Kit

Perhaps you’ve noticed a few unique details while examining pictures of my machine alongside those from the manufacturer. I’ve added a dash of personal flair by replacing the standard plastic elements such as taps, levers, and filter holders, with delightful wooden counterparts.

Lelit is the official seller of these items. Personally, I believe they greatly elevate the visual charm of the machine.

Enhance your machine with this beautifully crafted filter holder. Made from the same design as your machine, it adds a touch of elegance with its wooden construction. The set includes four IMS filters – a single cup filter, a pair for two cups, and a blind filter. This wooden filter holder is the ideal accessory for your Lelit, especially if you’re thinking about upgrading it with a walnut wood kit.

Enhance your espresso machine’s aesthetic appeal with this official kit from Lelit. It allows you to replace the standard plastic taps and lever components with sophisticated walnut wood elements. In my opinion, this tasteful upgrade not only elevates the machine’s elegance but also adds a touch of warmth and charm to it.

Exciting Opportunities for Improvement

A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Flow Control on Your Lelit Mara X V2

Meet the Bianca, the sophisticated older sibling of Mara X, which comes equipped with a standard flow control feature. Unfortunately, this handy tool isn’t a standard feature on the PL62X. However, don’t let this dissuade you! This accessory is incredibly useful, enabling you to monitor and tweak the extraction pressure in real-time. This opens up a whole new world of coffee aromas for you to explore. You can create and replicate extraction profiles to your heart’s delight, truly personalizing your coffee experience.

Are you on the hunt for a top-quality flow control device? I highly recommend you take a look at coffee-sensor. I personally sourced my own device from this site and was pleasantly surprised to find it was the most cost-effective choice at the time. They don’t just offer competitive pricing, their customer service is also exceptional. I’ve had multiple interactions with them and each time, they’ve been impressively prompt in their responses. What’s more, their after-sales service is truly praiseworthy – I can vouch for this as I had to request a replacement for another item I purchased from them.

Are you excited to begin the installation? Don’t worry, the procedure is quite simple and we’ve prepared a useful video tutorial for you right below. The only things you’ll require are some duct tape and a reliable, large wrench. So, shall we get started?

Discover Open Source Projects to Enhance Your PL62X Experience

If you’re a DIY enthusiast, you’ll be thrilled to know that there are several open source projects readily available here and there. These resources can guide you on how to add a PID and timer to your Lelit Mara X. I must admit, I haven’t had the opportunity to implement these modifications on my own machine yet, mainly due to a tight schedule.

Concluding Thoughts

At the attractive price of $1,130 on Amazon, this machine has truly won me over with its exceptional value for money. Its chic design adds a touch of elegance to my coffee nook, particularly with the charming wooden taps. Although it may not have all the cutting-edge features found in some of today’s premium coffee machines (which often come with a steeper price), it nonetheless provides a thorough, budget-friendly, and notably delightful user experience.

In my personal experience, the absence of a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) controller isn’t a disadvantage at all. With three temperature settings at your fingertips, you’re given the exciting opportunity to experiment and uncover the unique flavors that varying temperatures can coax from your coffee. Watching my father use a machine equipped with a PID, I’ve observed that the water temperature isn’t something that’s frequently tweaked in daily use. Therefore, having a selection of three temperatures, rather than ten, doesn’t truly restrict your coffee-making journey in any meaningful way.

Furthermore, this E61 model stands out as one of the most compact choices on the market, boasting a sleek profile of merely 22 cm in width. Don’t let its small size fool you though, it thoughtfully includes both a steam nozzle and a hot water tap for your convenience.

This exceptional machine is equipped with a high-quality filter holder, a comprehensive set of IMS filters, and a dependable tamper. So, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that there are no hidden expenses to fret over in this regard.

The key to an impeccable espresso is nestled within the core of a superior coffee grinder. Together with my co-author, we’ve thoroughly tested a grinder that’s priced under $100, and it consistently produced exceptional results in every brew.

Embarking on your espresso adventure? I highly recommend you take a peek at this enlightening article. It’s brimming with useful advice to guide you away from the pitfalls of the channeling phenomenon. Enjoy your brewing journey!

The Bright Side

  • Price
  • Successful design
  • 22 cm wide
  • Heats up quickly
  • Numerous accessories
  • IMS filters

Areas for Improvement

  • PID

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
A near-perfect choice for this espresso machine. One could argue about Lelit’s choice to offer a selection between three temperatures rather than opt for the addition of a PID. However, as I explain, this is not a major constraint. The machine proves to be excellent, offering remarkable value for money.

The art of brewing espresso coffee truly hinges on the skill of a barista. It’s a well-known fact that a top-notch tamper is a key component in this process. But it’s not just about pressing down – contemporary tampers, such as the Normcore V4, are meticulously designed to deliver consistent pressure with each use.

Discover the Sleek and Stylish Normcore V4 Tamper Design

Our Normcore tampers are available in a diverse range of sizes, spanning from 45.5 mm to 58.5 mm. They are designed to be compatible with all standard sizes, with the exception of Lelit’s popular 57 mm size. You can choose between a classic white or sleek black design, and select either a stainless steel or titanium base. Plus, with the option of a smooth or textured surface, you’re spoilt for choice!

Every kit we provide comes packed with three distinct springs. These springs are designed to exert forces of 15 lb (6.8 kg), 25 lb (11.3 kg), and 30 lb (13.6 kg) respectively. Notably, the Normcore model is conveniently delivered to you with the 25 lb spring already installed.

I must say, I’m quite taken with the design. The entire construction is of metal, lending it a robust and premium feel. The black color that I opted for, harmonizes beautifully with my existing equipment, particularly my Fellow Stagg EKG kettle.

Experience the comfort of the Normcore V4 tamper. Its design is delightful to handle, featuring a grip that nestles perfectly into the barista’s hand. However, it’s worth noting that unlike the MHW 3Bomber, the Normcore V4 does not include a rim for additional finger support.

The Normcore comes equipped with a guide that comfortably sits on the edge of the filter. This feature guarantees that users can tamp in a straight manner, a vital step for achieving a consistent water flow through the coffee puck.

Included in the kit is a protective cap designed to shield your worktop from the tamper base when it’s set down.

Exploring the Consistency of the Spring Force in the Normcore V4 Tamper

In my experience, this tamper has been remarkably consistent in applying the promised force. However, I tend to steer clear of the 15 lb (6.8 kg) spring as it doesn’t quite compact my coffee pucks as much as I’d like. Instead, I find myself frequently reaching for the 25 lb (11.3 kg) and 30 lb (13.6 kg) springs for that perfect brew.

Let’s Talk About Coffee Retention

I’ve noticed a minor issue of coffee retention nestled between the guide and the base of the tamper. This is a typical occurrence with all tampers that come with a guide. Although this retention is quite small and doesn’t affect the coffee’s purity, it’s highly recommended to clean this area from time to time to prevent any accumulation.

Comparing Normcore V4 and MHW 3Bomber: A Detailed Look

As I’ve previously noted, I’m also the proud owner of the MHW 3Bomber torque wrench. Having spent several months putting both products through their paces, I’m now in a position to draw some comparisons between them.

When it comes to choosing between the two, I find myself leaning towards the Normcore V4 for a few reasons. Firstly, its 58.5 mm diameter is slightly larger than the MHW 3Bomber’s 58.35 mm, which I find more appealing. Additionally, I’m a fan of the flat bases on the tampers. In my experience, ridged bases don’t necessarily enhance the aroma and they might even cause coffee retention in the crevices, which isn’t ideal.

On the other hand, when it comes to certain features, I find myself leaning towards the MHW 3Bomber. Its torque mechanism is particularly appealing, especially because it comes with a gratifying click that I find irresistible. What’s more, the grip is superior, courtesy of the rim on the handle, which offers enhanced stability.

Both products boast of superb quality. However, the ultimate choice hinges on your individual tastes and preferences.

Wrapping It Up

For quite some time now, Normcore has been crafting top-notch accessories specifically for coffee enthusiasts. Personally, I believe their V4 tamper is a triumph. This ingenious tool provides customizable tamping pressure through interchangeable springs, boasts an exceptional grip, and features a sleek, fashionable design.

It’s a bit of a letdown that the tamper doesn’t feature a dynamometric design. After all, the satisfying click sound it produces during use is quite delightful.

The Bright Side

  • Nice design
  • Noble materials
  • Very good grip
  • Presence of a guide
  • Regularity of applied force
  • Available in 58.5 mm (and many other standards)
  • Available with flat or ribbed surface
  • Supplied with cap
  • Reasonable price
  • Includes multiple springs

Areas for Improvement

  • Not dynamometric
  • No finger rim on the handle
  • Slight coffee retention between guide and base

Mastering the art of espresso extraction is at the core of every barista’s skill set, and a top-notch tamper is a must-have tool in this process. Today’s market offers a variety of tamper models, each engineered to deliver consistent pressure with every use. Notably, the MHW 3Bomber dynamometric tamper shines in this category. It guarantees a steady force of 30 lb (13.6 kg), ensuring exceptional precision with each tamp.

Discover the Future of Espresso: Unveiling the MHW 3Bomber Dynamometric Tamper Design

Offered in 51 mm, 53 mm, and 58.35 mm diameters, the MHW 3Bomber calibrated tamper stands out with its sophisticated design. This meticulously crafted tool blends stainless steel and aluminum with a walnut wood upper handle, resulting in a beautifully balanced and refined aesthetic.

Testing the MHW 3Bomber torque wrench - wrench design presentation

Not only is this tamper aesthetically pleasing, but it’s also comfortable to handle. The design of the tamper’s handle fits seamlessly into the barista’s hand, featuring a rim that’s strategically placed to provide a restful spot for the fingers. This ensures that the tamper’s grip feels comfortable and effortless during use.

Our tamper comes with a handy guide that comfortably sits on the filter’s edge. This clever feature guarantees that you’ll always tamp in a straight line, effectively preventing channeling. This is a crucial factor in ensuring a consistent water flow through your coffee cake, enhancing your brewing experience.

Test of the MHW 3Bomber torque tamper the tamper has a guide for tamping flat

It’s important to highlight that the base of the tamper is not flat as you might expect, but intriguingly ridged. The manufacturer explains that these unique grooves play a significant role in enhancing the aroma of your coffee by compacting it in a special way.

Test of the MHW 3Bomber dynamometric tamper The tamper has a ridged base that can hold back coffee a little.

After engaging in some lively conversations on my Discord server, which is a haven for coffee enthusiasts, we discovered that there’s no discernible difference in aroma between using a tamper with a flat base versus one with a ridged base.

Exploring the Consistency of Torque in the MHW 3Bomber Tamper

The consistency of this tamper is truly impeccable. It reliably delivers the promised force of 30 lb (13.6 kg) each and every time you use it.

Moreover, the MHW 3Bomber torque tamper takes a step beyond the traditional method of simply compressing a spring, as seen with the Normcore V4 tamper. This innovative tamper emits a satisfying “click” – reminiscent of the sound a DIY torque wrench makes when it releases its spring. This audible cue signals that the optimal 13.6 kg force has been achieved. Personally, I find this feature not only useful but also delightful to use.

At first, I was a bit doubtful about the practicality of a torque tamper. I had become quite comfortable with my routine of using a standard, budget-friendly tamper, always applying pressure in the same manner. The idea of incorporating this 13.6 kg mechanical marvel into my routine seemed unnecessary. But, I must admit, I was pleasantly mistaken. The real game-changer is its guidance and consistency. This tamper removes some of the unpredictable elements that can potentially affect the quality of an espresso.

Our tamper is designed to prevent angled tamping, guaranteeing a consistent application of force. This ensures that every cup of coffee you prepare is as perfect as the last, eliminating any inconsistencies between different brews.

Let’s Talk About Coffee Retention, Shall We?

As I pointed out before, ridges can sometimes cause a bit of retention. But don’t worry, there’s an easy solution to prevent this from happening. You can either give the tamper a gentle twist while you’re tamping, or you can opt to tamp it a second time. Simple, right?

It’s worth noting that retention can sometimes happen between the guide and the base of the tamper. This is a typical occurrence for all tampers equipped with a guide. While the retention level is minimal and won’t spoil your coffee, it’s a good practice to give this area a gentle clean occasionally. This will help you avoid any accumulation of residue over time.

Test of the MHW 3Bomber torque wrench there is some retention between the guide and the wrench base

Exciting News! Our Article Has Been Updated (December 8, 2023)

Just a few days after my article was published, MHW 3Bomber introduced an exciting update to their tamper – the flash version 2.0. This upgraded torque tamper now features a set of interchangeable springs, including a 20 lb. spring and a 30 lb. spring. Plus, it comes with a complete set of bases to suit your needs, including flat, grooved, and other varieties. Despite these enhancements, the tamper’s size remains the same at 58.35 mm. Who knows, maybe version 3 will bring us a 58.5 mm model? Let’s wait and see!

Wrapping It Up

I wholeheartedly endorse the MHW 3Bomber tamper, thanks to its superb value, sleek design, comfortable grip, and impressive torque performance. However, there’s always room for improvement. A slight size adjustment from 58.35 mm to a more fitting 58.5 mm would help eliminate any loose coffee residue lingering on the filter edges. Furthermore, a version with a smooth base instead of a ridged one would be a welcome addition (a feature already incorporated in tamper version 2).

Lastly, I wouldn’t necessarily view the lack of an adjustable force feature on the tamper as a disadvantage. Whether it’s through a thumbwheel, like on the Force Tamper, or by swapping out springs, as seen with the Normcore V4, it’s not something that typically requires frequent adjustments. So, in my opinion, it’s not a significant concern.

Great news! The robust MHW 3Bomber torque wrench is now conveniently accessible for purchase on Amazon.

The Bright Side

  • Nice design
  • Noble materials
  • Very good grip
  • Presence of a guide
  • Regularity of applied force
  • The click
  • Reasonable price

Areas for Improvement

  • Not available in 58.5 mm (only in 58.35 mm, 53 mm, and 51 mm)
  • Slight coffee retention between guide and base

My verdict? A perfect score of 5 out of 5!

Rating: 5 out of 5.
