The art of brewing espresso coffee truly hinges on the skill of a barista. It’s a well-known fact that a top-notch tamper is a key component in this process. But it’s not just about pressing down – contemporary tampers, such as the Normcore V4, are meticulously designed to deliver consistent pressure with each use.

Discover the Sleek and Stylish Normcore V4 Tamper Design

Our Normcore tampers are available in a diverse range of sizes, spanning from 45.5 mm to 58.5 mm. They are designed to be compatible with all standard sizes, with the exception of Lelit’s popular 57 mm size. You can choose between a classic white or sleek black design, and select either a stainless steel or titanium base. Plus, with the option of a smooth or textured surface, you’re spoilt for choice!

Every kit we provide comes packed with three distinct springs. These springs are designed to exert forces of 15 lb (6.8 kg), 25 lb (11.3 kg), and 30 lb (13.6 kg) respectively. Notably, the Normcore model is conveniently delivered to you with the 25 lb spring already installed.

I must say, I’m quite taken with the design. The entire construction is of metal, lending it a robust and premium feel. The black color that I opted for, harmonizes beautifully with my existing equipment, particularly my Fellow Stagg EKG kettle.

Experience the comfort of the Normcore V4 tamper. Its design is delightful to handle, featuring a grip that nestles perfectly into the barista’s hand. However, it’s worth noting that unlike the MHW 3Bomber, the Normcore V4 does not include a rim for additional finger support.

The Normcore comes equipped with a guide that comfortably sits on the edge of the filter. This feature guarantees that users can tamp in a straight manner, a vital step for achieving a consistent water flow through the coffee puck.

Included in the kit is a protective cap designed to shield your worktop from the tamper base when it’s set down.

Exploring the Consistency of the Spring Force in the Normcore V4 Tamper

In my experience, this tamper has been remarkably consistent in applying the promised force. However, I tend to steer clear of the 15 lb (6.8 kg) spring as it doesn’t quite compact my coffee pucks as much as I’d like. Instead, I find myself frequently reaching for the 25 lb (11.3 kg) and 30 lb (13.6 kg) springs for that perfect brew.

Let’s Talk About Coffee Retention

I’ve noticed a minor issue of coffee retention nestled between the guide and the base of the tamper. This is a typical occurrence with all tampers that come with a guide. Although this retention is quite small and doesn’t affect the coffee’s purity, it’s highly recommended to clean this area from time to time to prevent any accumulation.

Comparing Normcore V4 and MHW 3Bomber: A Detailed Look

As I’ve previously noted, I’m also the proud owner of the MHW 3Bomber torque wrench. Having spent several months putting both products through their paces, I’m now in a position to draw some comparisons between them.

When it comes to choosing between the two, I find myself leaning towards the Normcore V4 for a few reasons. Firstly, its 58.5 mm diameter is slightly larger than the MHW 3Bomber’s 58.35 mm, which I find more appealing. Additionally, I’m a fan of the flat bases on the tampers. In my experience, ridged bases don’t necessarily enhance the aroma and they might even cause coffee retention in the crevices, which isn’t ideal.

On the other hand, when it comes to certain features, I find myself leaning towards the MHW 3Bomber. Its torque mechanism is particularly appealing, especially because it comes with a gratifying click that I find irresistible. What’s more, the grip is superior, courtesy of the rim on the handle, which offers enhanced stability.

Both products boast of superb quality. However, the ultimate choice hinges on your individual tastes and preferences.

Wrapping It Up

For quite some time now, Normcore has been crafting top-notch accessories specifically for coffee enthusiasts. Personally, I believe their V4 tamper is a triumph. This ingenious tool provides customizable tamping pressure through interchangeable springs, boasts an exceptional grip, and features a sleek, fashionable design.

It’s a bit of a letdown that the tamper doesn’t feature a dynamometric design. After all, the satisfying click sound it produces during use is quite delightful.
